Harvard Parent Thread

Gibby; Thanks Again.

My son ended up needing a tux more than his suit! He rented a tux for freshman formal and had been wearing his suit with a bowtie for his orchestra performances, so we ended up buying a tux when the Quincy Spring Formal came around. Now I wonder when he’ll be wearing his suit. Though, one can definitely get by with a black suit and a bowtie. He generally has 3-6 orchestra performances and the house formals, so I think he will get his money’s worth out of the tux.

Thanks BrookingsMom.

Son received freshman room assignment. Very exciting. He and his roommates promptly became “friends” on Facebook, so he was able to learn a little bit about them. Interesting and accomplished young men. It makes what is still hard to believe (Harvard and our first off to college) much more real.

Hmm–the term bill did that for me!

Is the cah pahking for move in day different for Apley than the other houses? I think I’ve gone through the 238 pages of this great thread and no one seems to refer to Apley much
sniff.

The links on the FDO website are active, meaning they sent the mailings out.

I read one of the mailings (Arriving at Harvard) and it said Apley and Greenough/Hurlbut/Pennypacker residents are asked to park on the street only to unload all belongings, then we will be directed to special parking set aside by Harvard.

PS-- Your child got the best dorm ;)

We had Apley. Yes, rules are different - you drive directly and park in front of the building. There are going to be dedicated set of parking spots, and ton of upperclassmen to help with luggage.
All unloading took 15 min, very organized.
I then parked in front of cafe down the street for the rest of the day - there were some restrictions, don’t remember details, but it worked.

Best Dorm Ever! Excellent large rooms, all the best amenities for 20 people who leave there, great tight community.

Thanks CPU and tz
I told my DD that and she didn’t believe me that Apley was the best. Of course since I’m the parent, the child doesn’t listen to me anyway. Sound familiar?

I don’t know whether they direct Apley cars to some place different, but when we moved in they were directing all the cars after drop off to park in a parking structure on campus, Oxford Garage I think, that was thrown open for the use of parents on Move-in Day.

To follow on my previous inquiry about nonsensical gaps in student mail services: I agree that “Mother Harvard” has lots of bureaucratic procedures that can drive a person crazy. The hardest thing is that the procedures aren’t clear, uniform, or predictable. The second hardest thing is that there are no leaders or offices on campus who see it as their job to fix policies. They pass the buck. What does happen, however, is that if you go to enough people, you can eventually find someone who can make an exception in the rules for you. So, after bouncing around, our son was assigned a mail address that I could use for business papers this summer. This does not change the issue, however.

On mail services in particular, a popular topic on this thread, I’ve come to understand that staff really see it as a question of scarce real estate. They just don’t want to allocate the space necessary for students to have uninterrupted mail service. They treat mailboxes like dorm rooms. But mail doesn’t work that way. You have to supply your address for scholarships, employers, area businesses, etc. months before you might occupy a room. Seems like an overall leader could step in to arrange the necessary space to allow for assigning addresses and even holding mail, even if it had to be off site somewhere.

Agree?

re posts 3575-3579 about freshman outside awards and computer: I can confirm that our son was able to purchase a computer and that this amount essentially extended the amount of allowable (not recovered by Harvard) outside awards by $2,000. In essence, Harvard paid for his computer. We found the Harvard Financial Aid people very easy to work with and true to their word on this.

How are the rooms numbered at Apley? Just curious as to what floor I will need to haul DD’s boxes up to.

Pretty straightforward - room 34 is on 3rd floor, and 54 is on 5th

What about room 01 (not my room, btw)?

My son probably wore both fairly frequently, but he was in several music groups and sang in the Mem Church choir, so he is probably atypical. If you want to buy a used tux (or a new one for that matter), most kids will go to Keezer’s which has been around for decades. It is no longer in Harvard Square, but at 140 River Street - not too far from Harvard. I took him there last spring for a tux shirt and was amazed at the amount of formal wear that they have. It’s not fancy, but very reasonable.

Thanks twoby2013 and others who responded to my computer question. It seems my son won’t get extra US $ from external scholarship to make Harvard pay for his computer.
Does he need to work to cover his contribution? If he doesn’t want to work do I need to pay what is expected from him?
My son also got his roommates and dorm assignment. I am asking him to establish contact with them and ask for what everybody can bring to their apartment to share. Is it a good idea to start planing before move-in date? We receive also a brochure to buy extra long linens. I guess it is recommended to buy them?

Thanks

“If he doesn’t want to work do I need to pay what is expected from him?”

Term-time job allocations must be paid upfront to the university (see your term bill). Your son may choose to work and then earn the money back throughout the course of the year, or not.

Beds are X-long, so yes you need x-long sheets. You can purchase X-long sheets at Bed Bath and Beyond for less.

Did your S/D have fridge/microwave in dorm room or was the one in their dorm kitchen/lounge accessible enough?

Greetings! Hard to believe that move in is only a month away. My son is participating in FOP and has been told that he can only bring the bag he needs for FOP. I will fly in to meet him on Sunday before move-in day and bring 2 suitcases of his stuff. I am also assuming that we can start shipping now that we have his dorm assignment? For those parents who don’t have cars and can’t bring a lot, are there any close by targets or walmarts or similar stores to buy necessities? Also any hints on shipping- which vendors are cheapest, etc? Thanks in advance for your answers.
