The calendar for winter break is 12/21, should we book the flight on 12/21 or can we book the flight the after the last exam date? Many thanks!!

Students have to leave by 12/22 at 12pm. Exams get moved around and switched sometimes, but not usually by a lot. I don’t know how booking flights works, but maybe a ticket can be bought in advance, and the date changed later. Your student might have their last exam on the 15th or something. Also note that while every course has an exam group, not every final is a 3hr final. I have 2 courses this semester that have in class 1-1.5 hr finals, so the exam group means nothing to students in those courses.

Thanks! Currently the last exam date is 12/18(Wednesday), do you know if there will be exam or move to 12/20(Friday)? If no exam on Friday, I can book on 12/20(Friday).

There are exams up to and including on the 21st (I had an exam on the 21st last year… Not fun, but you get extra time to study).

I doubt there will be a change from to 18th to the 20th, but it is too early in the semester to tell. Do you know if any exams conflict? In that case, one will be moved 24 hrs in advance or postponed for 24 hours.

thank you! No conflict per my child calendar.

Here’s an edit to my post… seems things have changed this year.

"December 21, Saturday

All Freshman students must vacate the dorms by 3 pm.
Upperclass students must vacate the Houses by 5 pm.
Students not continuing in residence for spring term 2014 must leave their rooms by noon.
Students transferring from one House to another must move on this day after noon. Check with your new House Administrator for a specific time."

I need to plan for my son’s trip for this thanksgiving break. Have anybody ever used or heard of ‘GO BUS Boston’ during Thanksgiving break? Even though people recommend to take a train than a bus it seems attractive because the bus leaves from Cambridge.
Thank you for sharing!

I know there has been discussion about storing boxes during the summer, but what about furniture? My son is a first year at Harvard, and bought a number of items for his room/suite. He has a futon, 2 chairs, a coffee table and sofa table. What are some options for storing those over summer break before moving into a residential house? Would it make sense financially to rent a van/SUV to transport items to a storage unit further out in the suburbs?

Some houses have storage for furniture, others do not. Mather House last year would not let students store coaches, futons, or chairs, as the university was buying new furniture for each in-suite common room. (Some students circumvented this by storing their furniture at another house under a resident’s name). Eventually, all houses are supposed to get new in-suite common room furniture . . . so other houses may go the way of Mather. Student’s can also store furniture off campus at several storage facilities. We did that for my daughter the year between her freshman and sophomore years. If I remember correctly, it cost us about $300 for a small off-campus storage unit for the summer.

Gibby, do you mind sharing the company? Thanks!

@student4ever:) - Will do!

Happy New Year to all!

My S is class of 2015. I am beginning to think about graduation. Does anyone have advice on how long we should plan to be around (before and after graduation)?

Thanks so much!

Wow - you are really planning ahead! I am looking forward to 2014 graduation and will post my experiences after - Hope that will help you plan for 2015! We are arriving in Boston on Monday and leaving on Friday (graduation is on Thursday) Happy planning!

lhenkin,

Congratulations on your students graduation in 2015. We will also be at Harvard graduation ceremonies. My son graduated from Harvard (undergrad) in 2012 and is currently attending HLS (Harvard Law School) and will be graduating 2015. We arrived very early on Tuesday morning and left Friday afternoon. The school has activities for families all week. The hotels book early so making arrangements 1 year in advance is good planning. We will be staying with my son this time as he has a Harvard Graduate School apartment.

Good luck to all as the students end the last semester of the year

That’s nothing, my son won’t be graduating until 2018…and I’m already wondering if we should stay at the same hotel we stayed at on a camp visit there in 2010…
