Harvard Parent Thread

My daughter spent her sophomore, junior and senior years at Mather, but spent a summer in Cabot on the Quad and love it! She especially liked the wide-open field between the dorms, where kids could play volleyball, softball, or just sit out on the grass without being bothered by throngs of tourists.

@gibby,

“My daughter spent her sophomore, junior and senior years at Mather, but spent a summer in Cabot on the Quad and love it!”

My son spent a summer at Harvard, and his then-girlfriend was in a house on the Quad. She loved it, too. It was a place to decompress a bit after a stressful day.

Our daughter will be in Leverett with her block mates, she is very happy. I don’t know much about the quad houses, other than they are not typically preferred initially because of where they are located. I am sure any student there will make the adjustment and love their time spent there. I am sure they are beautiful and more peaceful and have a wonderful community of great kids.

@GreatKid - This is what I keep telling my daughter, but she doesn’t seem convinced - it doesn’t help that some of the friends she had hoped to be close to are in Adams, which is the most centrally located house. I’m sure she will adjust and enjoy her time on the Quad - and as a Pfoho resident, she will be able to eat at Adams, so she will not need to return to her house for all her meals.

BldrDad, I’m sorry for your daughters dissapointment! Hopefully her dissapointment is soon replaced with a different perspective and optimism.
I would love to be familiar with the algorithm that is used for housing determinations.
A young man who has a very recognizable last name and who clearly comes from significant power and influence was quaded.
I was teasing our daughter, I told her with one phone call that situation will be changed.

My daughter spent 3 years in Currier which is in the quad. There are advantages to being closer, I’m sure, but having a large room to herself and a bath she shared with only one other person the entire time she lived there was a good tradeoff.

Dear fellow parents,
I have question related to the on campus intern/job interview for kids with average GPA. I never had this issue with my son, who graduated two years ago. But my daughter’s GPA is 3.3, and she quite social. My son said there’s a GPA cut off for on campus interview, so my daughter will not be able to secure a job through on campus interview, is that true for your experience?

infohead – my understanding is that there is a GPA cut off for some job interviews, namely big 3 consulting firms and perhaps some of the bulge bracket wall st. IBanking outfits. I think my kid said the cut off was 3.6, which she doesn’t quite have either.

As for the quad, while my D doesn’t just love it because it is well off the beaten path and the shuttles don’t run on time, we like it as she frequently calls us while she’s walking back to her place from the main campus. It seems like she has to pack for the day when she leaves in the morning because running back to the dorm to get a sweater or something else you want is such a drain on time.

@notjoe and @florida26 - a belated thank you for your responses. tw2 couldn’t wait any longer and hit the accept button. Can’t believe I’m a Harvard parent now! I have to go back to page 1 in this thread now and learn all I can

@doubtful - Thanks! I’ll try to remember that next year - tell her to call home when walking to/from the quad.

Initially students tend to be upset by being “quaded”, but then they realize that the actual amenities in the Quad are a lot nicer than those in the older houses. My son was in Kirkland and loved it, BUT in his sophomore year, he lived with two friends in what I considered to be a tenement. One girl in his blocking group left for Cabot after a year, and she was much happier up there. Nothing is really that far away. Tell your daughter to try to fall in love with where she is. Her pipes won’t clank non-stop and the windows won’t be drafty, which, during a winter like the one that we are supposedly emerging from, is a real boon.

The Quad might be out of the way compared to the other houses, but kids get used to it and actually love the amenities that are MUCH nicer than those of the river houses. There are more singles in the Quad too. Housing in the river houses may be closer to campus, but the rooms are tiny and there is a HUGE reason they are in the midst of undergoing their Housing renovation. ( They are not as nice as they look from the outside). Also, over time, kids form and maintain friendships no matter where they live. It does not limit anyone if they don’t let it.

Hello- I am in awe of the amount of information shared by parents & students alike on this thread! My S has “officially” accepted his EA offer and is now a member of the class of 2019. While I have only made it through 2008 (before flipping ahead to 12/14 , the curiosity got the best of me) I am looking forward to gaining the benefit of your own experiences. I’ve realized I should save this thread for home though, as the entries on dropping the kids off at school literally had tears pouring down my cheeks- at work!

Thanks DrC. My daughter was also accepted EA and is 99% sure she will be attending this fall. I’m finally ready to make the leap myself.

Hi parents,

Does anybody know the requirements for getting travel aid to Visitas? Is travel aid offered only to students who get financial aid?

Dear friends, any tips on how to be selected for FUP ( freshman urban program ) for pre orientation?

Get your application in early

Thank you Florida 26. The review committee for pre orientation is different from the admission right?
