Ok-and get a cab from the station?

Loki:

here is info on how to get to the airport. You should add up the cost of going from Cambridge to South Station, from South Station to Providence and from there to the airport to see whether the $49 fare is worth it!

Folks,

I wanted to come back and say thank you for the information I got on where to stay for a visit to Harvard. My husband and I visited our son over Thanksgiving. I came here for suggestions on where to stay - seeking a place that was not too expensive, with a kitchen, that was also convenient to transportation.

Folks here recommended the Homewood Suites on the border of Cambridge and Arlington and that worked out very well. We will definitely stay there again on future visits.

Marite:
You have a good point. Its not a bad option for an alternative to driving up if you have more than one person, and you rent a carā¦still more than driving, but slightly faster for us.

Hello everyone!
I also have a question about winter breakā¦do our Harvard students need to be back for āReading Periodā? I am trying to find airfare that seems to not cost a small fortune. That appears to be Monday or Tuesday. Of course āReading Periodā is Monday. What is this and is it mandatory?
Also, exactly how does one get to Manchester? Take the T to South station, then what is the best way to go??

Thanks parents! You are very special people hereā¦
On a side note: my student had a medical problem last week and the Harvard health center did a great job for her! I was a basket case, but at least they are very good with covering all the bases with these kids. Just thought Iād share that.

Reading period is the time before the start of exams when students are expected to read and prepare themselves for the exams. Classes are not expected to be held during the reading period, but many language courses are. Some courses give take-home exams that are due in hard copy form some time during reading period (it varies on the course). Many classes hold review sessions shortly before exams. Your student needs to check with individual classes to find out what the instructors plan. I doubt that not being back on the first day of reading period is a big deal.

If your student is going to the airport, check about the Harvard shuttle service. I donāt know how often it runs but in the past it was available to students. For buses to the Manchester airport, look up the link below:

[Manchester-Boston Regional Airport - MHT - Wiki - SmarterTravel.com](http://wiki.smartertravel.com/index.php/Manchester-Boston_Regional_Airport_-_MHT)

Edit to Add: Flightline apparently operates between Sullivan Square T station (I believe itās on the Orange Line) and Logan Airport at the Boston end and MHT at the other. Greyhound also offers limited bus service from South Station to MHT.

Thank you Marite! This is so different from any other school, its hard to know exactly what is expected.
Now to work on the flight to the west coast. Yikes! Prices are sky high. (Note to selfā¦buy tickets real early next year!)
Has anyone taken that shuttle to Manchester? Does it drop you close to the airport?
Hey Mariteā¦have a wonderful day. Let me know when you want to visit west : ). You help so many of us new parents!

dogdog:

The January exams are for this year only. Beginning next year, exams will be held in December. I donāt know what will happen in January starting next year.

From the link I posted, the flightline shuttle takes you straight to the Manchester Airport, which has only one terminal. The Harvard shuttle should take one to Logan airport, I believe. Students can also get to Logan by the T (take the Red Line to South Station then take the Silver Line bus to Loganāit should take 45 minutes and cost $1.75. A taxi will set you back up to $40).

Interesting . . . we all went to Freshman Parents Weekend, saw that our kids were getting along just fine without us, and stopped visiting the Parentsā Thread for group counseling. I wondered how far down the Harvard board it had slid, and found it on page four. But I guess thatās a good sign! :)

I have noticed a slight uptick in phone callsāas the second series of exams and papers come due, and an elevated stress level. Is this what we can expect through exams? I am being a bit neurotic, perhaps, but I worry about the honeymoon ending once exams start.

gadad brought up a good point⦠hopefully everyoneās children are doing great and are happy students. My son is happy and is making new friends. He did say that he noticed the students were a bit stressed now with finals after Christmas break. My son comes home late tonight - YAY! but is bringing home several books and study materials to study. Iām glad to see that next year the Christmas break will be just that a ābreakā from studies for them.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season with their families!!

p.s. hereās a question⦠how are the suitemates selected for next year? how many roommates can you choose to be in your suite, etcā¦

They choose each other. They āblockā with their close friends.

Up to eight.

Actually, you āblockā with up to eight, and that puts you in the same house. You may or may not live in the same suite with all eight. Different houses approach the system differently after assignment. You can also ālinkā with another group of eight (optional) and that puts both blocking groups in the same āneighborhoodā but not in the same house.

^^Correct. Twinmomās explanation is better than mine.

Yippee, mine is home safe and soundā¦I just wanted to wish everyone here a wonderful Holiday Season. Hope the kids are home safe and enjoying themselves. āOur house has gotten BIG and our streets look very wideā. I love the freshman year!
Happy New Year!

And Happy Holidays to you dogdog12! Still waiting, another hour until my two are backāa long day from Cambridge to our snowy hills. I wonder how much time Iāll get on the DSL in the next few weeks??

enjoy your time with your child fauve!!

Two back home on the same flight and now the previously sedate house is buzzing with activity again. Nice. I hope all of you have joyful holidays!

As he was about to leave for the holidays, Sās chum, who comes from a much warmer place than here, was lamenting that he had not experienced real snow this year. He went to the airport and found his plane was delayed because of a snowstorm in his hometown. So he stayed another day. He got another flight yesterday just in time to miss the monster snowstorm just about to hit us!

Hi all! I hope you all had peaceful holidays with your students at home. Here is my questionāmy d has been blissfully happy all semester, but came home stressed with upcoming exams. Her long term hs boyfriend broke up with her, and invited his new girlfriend here for a week. One of her teammates (her best friend on the team) has decided to quit playing. I am putting a very different kid back on the train to return to Harvard. Help!

Can any of you experienced parents give me a sense of how exams are managed, and more importantly, how freshman stress level might be managed? What, if anything, can parents do? (What is my job in this?) Should we expect that the initial excitement of being away from home, among new friends, etc, will wear thin, now that exams are here?
