Harvard Parent Thread

On a TOTALLY different topic–anyone seen Harvard beats Yale documentary/film? Its GREAT! It’s really a human interest story, and a bonus if you love sports—but also an interesting peek at the culture of the two schools in the late 60s.

So, any thoughts on president Faust’s letter?

I’m a bit anguished over the fact that tuition will still go up while amenities may go down.

I liked it—it reflects reality. I agree with Bay that it’s unfortunate that amenities will go down as tuition rises…a fact of life that we all face now. And think about it…what was the alternative? To say nothing or do nothing? So much of what is happening now is about managing perceptions…and we need as much “their is nothing to fear but fear itself” as we can get now!

Anybody going to junior parents’ weekend - March 6-7?

My family is DocT - we’re arriving Thursday night. Have you looked at the tentative schedule for the weekend?

Not a parent here, but I’ll just say that one of my freshman friends has the worst roommates ever; she literally had to sleep at UHS because her roommates wouldn’t let her sleep and she was barred from taking her finals by UHS because she was so sleep-deprived and her parents could sue the school if she did take them in that condition. When she recently spoke to the freshmen dean about this, the dean did not let her switch rooms even though there were empty singles available in other dorms. On the other hand, the other roommate assignments that I know about seem to be quite decent.

“My family is DocT - we’re arriving Thursday night. Have you looked at the tentative schedule for the weekend?” - I’m looking at the print out now

We’re attending too. I haven’t seen any schedule. Is it online? Guess I’ll look now.

Okay … I didn’t see anything. Were we supposed to register?

You should have received something in the mail that refers to a site that has a preliminary schedule. I just have the printouts in front of me but I don’t know the site that they were downloaded from. On Friday, we are suppose to go to the Ticknor Lounge, in Boylston Hall for a final schedule.

There’s a jogging tour of Harvard at 8:30 AM on Saturday - I think I’ll skip that one!

My D (H 2012) did send an update about her Presidential Scholar status. (Hope this year’s group gets treated better than last year’s. Our former Prez showed little interest.)
Good luck. I know my D wishes she could have traded years.

DocT - We didn’t receive anything. I actually suspect we’ve been missing a lot of mail; our letter carrier has been ill and our mail has been sporadic at best. When did you receive this?

I googled to look for the site that you are referring to, but I don’t see it.

Thanks for the info.

Okay, I found the site. Thanks for the heads up. I’ll skip the jogging tour too!

Twinmom - No registration; just show up and go to stuff. There are receptions at the residences of each of the House Masters at 5:00 Friday. I’d like to see what that relationship looks like, since I don’t really have a feel for House staffing. And the lunches at the House dining halls on Saturday should amuse our kids since they’ll no doubt be far more appetizing than the regular lunches when the kids are the only anticipated diners!

Gadad - Yes, I was already informed that we’re going to that! The weekend looks like a lot of fun … I am determined to get to see the glass flowers this time around.

^^Be sure to check in first at the opening reception and get your Jr. Parents badges, since they will get you into the special parents’ events and also get you free admission to glass flowers and other museums.

The glass flowers are amazing - definitely set time aside for them. As for me, I’ve never gotten inside Widener Library - this is my big chance!

Well, Guitars101 - if you still read this thread (most of the charter members seem to have dropped out after Freshman Parents Weekend when they saw for themselves that their kids were alive and well  ) would you like the honor of post #1000 on the thread you started?

Guitars will have to settle for 1001!

GADad - The Widener tour is excellent - lots of interesting Titanic info! Try to make it if you can.
