Lucie73: I’d be interested in renting your place. Finding a swap may be a little harder, although LA is a big place. Much easier than trying to find a swap with, let’s say, Anchorage, AK. Dates are key too. Will you be gone the same time Harvard kids are moving in.

I have a small B&B business (“host home”) in a in Big Ten town. Perhaps you could rent a bedroom or two when Lucie is in residence. Maybe she’d even cook you breakfast. ;)

[The Harvard Crimson :: Opinion :: Fire These Administrators](http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=528235)

Hear, hear. Summary: Before rushing to fire low level staff, look at administrators (and whether the jobs they are supposed to fill are actually needed)

Kid just got home last night, exhausted after all that packing and moving. She brought back a lot of candy and I asked her about it. She said that they had maybe $65 or $75 to spend and she had forgotten all about it. So instead of letting it go unused, she bought a ton of candy at some Harvard store.
The administration could definitely stop giving our students that amount. Another place they could cut-back is the t-shirts they give out to advertise their advising program. If parents or students have any more suggestions of where we could ask the administration to cut back and instead continue the shuttle service as in past years, please post and we could put these points together and send them a letter.

Mmm…I am confused. Wasn’t there a page 84 to this thread? It seems all the posts dealing with the Kirkland shooting on Monday are gone. Why would that be?

yes, all the posts dealing with the shooting at kirkland has been condensed to 1 thread for ease of reading and understanding. please refer to “shooting today at Kirkland” thread for current info

Thanks Guitars!

I have learnt from this incident that my son is not in the text message alert system. I guess he missed that memo (and probably many more!) when he started at Harvard last Fall. Does anyone know where/how a student subscribes to the text message alert system?

HUPD oversees the text message alert system- they seem to be the overall security administrators.

Here is the address he can use to enroll in the system : messageme.harvard.edu

Nikiwe, wow, that can be scary. It’s good to get it fixed now so he can be on board with everyone else for next year :)

Thanks for the link, Fauve.

You’re welcome Nikiwe.

This incident points up what we all try not to think about—Harvard is an urban campus. Response time is important, but this is no substitute for encouraging students to resist over-confidence about their personal security. When you are in an urban environment, you need to be paying attention to what is going on, and if something looks questionable (you hear something that sounds like gun shots, you see police suddenly running around, or confusion), its best to head in the other direction.

My daughter was set to go out for a run, and hadn’t checked her email. Her roommate called her and told her not to go out. She and her roomate were in the MAC at 5:00, next door when the incident allegedly occurred.

In view of the current Crimson story that the incident may have been drug related (my first thought), its important to underscore for students that when you purchase illegal drugs, you are always dealing with a criminal element, no matter how benign the front line salesman looks.

Loki5 very nicely said

Loki5’s excellent analysis should be included in the pre-frosh pamphlet so families are aware of this example of urban life, and the consequences of pot dealings.

Hey 2012 parents—have a great summer! i will be looking forward to sophmore year discussions! I am going to invite 2013 parents to review our posts!

I just wanted to bump this thread up so our new 2013 parents could find it easily and check out the wonderful ideas and suggestions from seasoned Harvard parents

Congratulations parents of 2013!

Have any of the continuing parents received the financial aid info yet? We still have not received anything about what our tuition etc. will be for next year. I’m assuming that if nothing changed from last year, that it will be similiar

Sorry about bumping this again, but I am getting concerned about our fin aid for this year.

thanks!

Guitars - To the best of my recollection, it comes in mid-June. I’ll see if I can find the date of last year’s letter. Your son can also check on MyHarvard.

^ ^ Just checked … last year’s letter was dated June 6 and was probably received a few days later.
