And sometimes, that includes learning tough lessons like how the right to free speech does not absolve you from the consequences of saying whatever it is that you (the proverbial “you”) said.

When it comes to the literal state/government, there are supposed to be exactly no consequences for ‘speech’. That is exactly what freedom of speech means - for the government to not infringe upon speech it doesn’t like.
