Harvard SCEA Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

@orionsagittarius I know Harvard says they dont have a ‘quota’ per highschool but I do think it’s easier for them to compare you against classmates in your school than classmates across the country

It’s so weird thinking that three of us applied early because no one has been accepted in like 10 years. Our valedictorian made it through the wait list last year.

@tuty143 But wouldn’t this comparison be limited to grades and test scores? Theoretically, even those applying from the same school could be very different, especially through Harvard’s holistic lens.

@schroscat My school has rankings but no valedictorian title  its annoying because you work so hard but don’t get the recognition unless of course you tell everyone your class rank. But whatever. My recognition will be when I get into a good college for me

@tuty143 we don’t have rankings, but we still have Val/sal. Neither applied to Harvard. And that’s a really good point!

@schroscat We have the same thing at my school. Do you think the lack of class rank could hurt an application?

I think like two other people applied SCEA to Harvard from my school and I know of one other person who applied from my town but a different school

@orionsagittarius it would mainly be used for grades, but also for, lets say clubs. If a student just raves about how much they love medicine and want to pursue it but they are not involved in any science or medical related clubs that could be fine. But lets say another applicant has a club available at school (lets say a made up future doctors club) listed as one of their ECs. Now the adcoms know a) this club exists and b) applicant A never pursued it. Of course if applicants are applying to entirely different spectrums of studies this wouldn’t apply. Just a hypothetical.

@anxiousEm IMO, I don’t think so. Our summa list is literally differentiated by .01 between ranks. I’m 32/432, but the difference between me and the valedictorian is only 3 points weighed.

@anxiousEm nah. I’ve asked my GC about this and he said hes talked to Harvard adcoms and they have a pretty good idea of how different highschools work and how to determine the potential of the student. So nope! Not having class rank won’t impact your application

@anxiousEm Over 70% of admitted students don’t report class rank, so it won’t be a problem at all!

Trying to distract myself with other apps… that I hopefully won’t have to submit. Haha

fingers crossed
