Harvard SCEA Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

@snackpack02 Smooth. REAL smooth. :smiley:

@schroscat awwww if we get into harvard (fingers crossed!), I guess you’ll have to teach me how to crochet me a patik! And I wish it snowed here… I haven’t seen snow for the last five years. ;_;

Since a majority of you guys (based in statistics) are most likely going to end up being deffered … You should know that all that that means is that they want to see whether or not someone similar to you will apply Rd, and then they’ll compare you two.

Example: let’s say that your an asian male from Massachusetts who has a 2200 and a 3.8 GPA, and you apply early… The reason why you’ll get deffered is because they want to see if in the RD round, another asian will apply with the same stats, same “everything”, but better Teacher recs (just an example). They’ll then take the latter.

Early decision / SCEA is exclusively for individuals who harvard finds so “attractive” that they won’t be able to replace them in the RD round (athletes, geniuses etc)…

If you get deffered , the best thing to do is apply to other schools, and hope for the best / improve stats regarding Harvard

You guys should see me on April fools

Now I’m skeptical about any information on here :)]

@Stephiey Oh my gosh, I’m so darn nervous for next week. I’ll teach you how to crochet a cupcake, if you’d like! And if you get in, get ready for snow. So. Much. Snow.

@verizonwireless I don’t think that’s true. When you’re deferred, it’s usually because you had good statistics and stuff, but they just did not match up to the level of the applicants let in early admission. If you look at the stats of the people admitted early for harvard last year, a majority of them are not “geniuses”, they just have very strong applications.

@schroscat
All they are saying is a male and a female are dead and not sure if there is another suspect

@verizonwireless And we also need to remember that grades/test scores aren’t the end all be all for Harvard; we ALL know they consider your story…it’s who you are. If you have great grades but lack leadership/impact in the community, they might defer you because someone else had those qualities. It’s not as black&white with the holistic approach.

@Fuzerabit Thanks!

I think I’ve had multiple heart attacks from this thread today @-)

@flautamagica , not true… They all scored above harvards threshold for average GPA/ sat… As well have sublime ECs and other things. Those that didn’t had unique stories / backgrounds that were deemed so unique that they couldn’t be replicated in the rd round

@verizonwireless Actually, if you look at last year’s SCEA acceptance thread, not all have scored perfect sats/gpas. I noticed a student who did not have over a 2100 and was accepted. It’s not a matter of grades to admissions; everything is considered.

What do you guys think is the most quirky thing about you?
For me, I always throw out the first item in a package because I think it’s the most processed. Doesn’t matter if it’s bread, ham, cookies or etc into the trash it goes

@verizonwireless I agree with @schroscat , also a few people had less than the average SAT/ACT score and did not have very stellar extracurriculars

If I am turning up the volume on the t.v., the number has to either be a multiple of 2 or a multiple of 5. Also, whenever I apply makeup, I always have the “beauty YouTuber” voice in my head, as if I were filming my own tutorial.

@schroscat that person must’ve been deemed irreplaceable

Another thing is I hate odd numbers, I think they are so ugly but the ugliest would have to be any combination of 3 and 7

@verizonwireless @flautamagica That’s what I’m saying. People that are deemed irreplaceable are not just those with the highest statistics–you mentioned that “all scored above Harvard’s threshold”–or even the best ECs. Harvard, in reality, wants to see a student that will mold into their college campus, will interact with both students/faculty, and will ultimately bring about success for both themselves and Harvard. Admissions doesn’t want the world’s top genius if all they do is study and memorize; they want social people who have good character and can be relatable to their peers. These qualities are not reflected in a mere SAT score, GPA, or even a list of ECs. That is something the essay, the interview, and the supplements can provide.

From what I’ve gathered, Harvard wants to see passion. If your application reflects passion and determination, there is a likely chance you will be considered. Again, it’s not a matter of test scores anymore because we all know that not everyone is the best test taker–nor is it the most efficient way to measure intelligence–and there’s so much more to a student than a number.
