lol well I’m just not sure of the process of getting other Ph.D.s, so I can’t speak for them. I’m only familiar with my field, really.

OK, to specify, sciences and engineering in general. As for the “other” Ph.D.s–history, art, language, etc.–I’m not sure about whether they are comparitively easy or tough to get, so I said nothing, lol.

Cambridge has a hush-hush backway into getting a Ph.D. One only needs to write an authorative text in a field to be granted it. So, say, if your new field has you and yourself in it…

I’d totally love a Ph.D. in girl hurnting. Since that is a “new” field, if Guitar and I write an authorative text on the subject, can we get degrees from Cambridge? That would rock. I wonder where I’d hang my diploma…

Almost no one I know who has a Ph.D. is called “Dr.” except for the professors. Some of my teachers have Ph.D.'s, but none go by Dr. Whatever. To each his own. :)

I noticed the w.t.f. thing before. It’s a little overdoing the censoring, eh?

Why? I think every school has at least one. A Ph.D. is a much higher and tougher degree than is required to teach (and than most teachers have), I don’t see it pretentious to go by “Dr.” ;)

You seem to have this PC “anti-pretentious” tendency just to make sure no one thinks you think too highly of yourself. As I see it, you work hard, why not use the title?

I’m not anti-pretentious. I just hate calling Ph.D.'s doctors because it seems like such an M.D. term. I mean, it’s their right and all, but it still annoys me a little. Just a little quirk of mine, I’m sure I’ll outgrow it anyway.

Now, this teacher was particular annoying because he actually corrected people who called him Mr. So most of us just called him Mr. all the time. :D

Pretension annoys me. People should be confident and comfortable enough in themselves so that they don’t need to bolster their feelings of adaquecy and superiority by forcing it on others. Why should you care whether a bunch of high school kids call you doctor or not? Show them you are intelligent and educated by what you say and how you act. I also get annoyed with all those Penn issues (like T shirts that say “Not Penn State”). Why does it matter? Yeah, you go to an Ivy instead of a state school; that doesn’t automatically make you better or smarter than any kid at Penn State. People should show their ability instead of simply telling everyone how smart/good/whatever they are.

My private school doesn’t have any teaching requirements. The vast majority of teachers have a couple masters degrees. Some have Ph.D.s. The headmaster and a couple other notable teachers have only college educations.

We have a substitute teacher who corrects us when we call him Mr. He’s obnoxious. lol
