Harvey Mudd Regular Decision Class of 2024

Daughter got a reject

Yes - that was in mine too!

Accepted, super excited!

When my DS was accepted to Mudd 3 years ago, he got a handwritten note on his acceptance letter (in snail mail) from Thyra Briggs (Admissions VP), referencing a specific sentence in his essay about FIRST Robotics telling him he’d find many such amazing experiences at Mudd. Of course, I cried—I loved that they saw him and valued him.

Today he’s flying home cross-country for what was to be spring break, but is now an online completion of the semester due to Covid-19 precautions. The school handled everything about this situation perfectly. As the decision was announced, they were already unloading storage pods for the kids to put their dorm belongings in for the summer. (They provide this service every year, but it was especially helpful this week since no one could have predicted they’d be packing up in March.) My son got an extension on his midterm so that he could have time to pack. Some kids needed weekend hours for loading the storage pods, so they made it happen. Local parents offered places to stay, snacks, supplies
whatever kids whose parents were far away couldn’t provide. All around the country parents offered up spare bedrooms for international kids if they aren’t able to return home. It’s just a beautiful community. I’m sorry you guys won’t have the same accepted students program my son experienced, but I hope you’ll join the Facebook group and so you can ask questions and see what a special place it is.

This is what I posted in the FB HMC admitted families section (sharing here because when my DS was choosing between Mudd and CalTech, I couldn’t find much online to help him make that decision):

My Mudd junior is majoring in engineering. Sophomore year he worked as a TA in two classes and as a head TA in another. He interned in Kona, Hawaii designing and fabricating a 50 meter diameter robotic cage for a sustainable fishing company
wearing a swimsuit to work each day
and scuba diving each weekend. This year he has worked on two amazing clinic projects and co-authored a paper that was accepted for publication. Before Christmas, he was offered two internships and accepted one with a self-driving car company. Last weekend, the professor in charge of his clinic project invited their team to his home for a delicious taco dinner. It’s common for professors to take a small group of kids to a restaurant or their home, so that they have a chance to get to know the students.

Congrats to ohnoitsme and all the rest of the class of 2024.

Thank you @CaryPlanner! It looks like my decision might also come down to Harvey Mudd vs. Caltech, so your response is especially helpful to me!

rejected
1540, 4.0 UW
This was his #1 choice, so it’sa hard hit.

Accepted!!! Finalist for the presidential scholarship!! International student from Colombia!! 1500 SAT

@RandomStudent
How were you notified about presidential scholarship?

Congrats! Did the letter mention anything about the major? My son got accepted letter (oh, yeh! we are so excited, this is our dream school). But the acceptance letter doesn’t mention anything about the major he picked in the application so I wonder how the major is handled.

@RonCiao
Our portal letter didn’t say anything about major either. Perhaps in the mailed acceptance package? Also, are all PSP finalist notified on portal or on letter in mail?

Could be. Let’s see. Also, the letter didn’t mention financial aid. Does it mean we don’t have it? When can we start to discuss the financial aid with school, before or after the confirmation? We will try our best to pay but it’s pretty expensive. It’s really helpful if we can get some amount of aid.

@RonCiao @Lsutbab When you are admitted to Harvey Mudd, you are admitted to the whole college, not a specific major :). So if you applied as a chemistry major but want to actually become a CS major, you can.
I believe this is true for most private schools

@RonCiao
Check your financial aid on your portal. We are able to see ours in the financial aid tab.

Accepted!
Now really torn between Mudd and MIT

@PansyGarden111, @ohnoitsme, and those admitted I created an account because I felt compelled to tell yall to join the discord. The community there is really great. I didn’t realize how much I loved Mudd until I started talking to everyone there. We are chatting all day and already forming connections. The students and community at Mudd are really what sets it apart.

College Confidential won’t let me post the link to it for some reason but it is in the bio of @hmc2024 on instagram. There is a chance that I may have posted the link several times by accident. If that is a case sorry my bad

The result of PSP just came out. My son got it!

@firstbklyn
Congrats to your son!!! Woo hoo!

Hi,

DD is deciding between Mudd, UCB BioE, UCLA BioE, JHU ChemBE. Interested in Biology, research, some liberal arts focus, post-grad intentions. UC BioE programs seem interesting. Concerned about stress, GPA issues at each of the above. In-state for UCs. Visited all, except JHU. Any pointers? Thanks very much!

I think price is something you should definitely take into account. Berkeley will provide a top-class education, as will Harvey Mudd. With all things equal, I would prefer Harvey Mudd, but Berkeley would be about 40k cheaper if you’re in-state right? Unless you are extremely well off and 160k doesn’t really matter to your family, I’m not sure if the difference between Harvey Mudd and Berkeley/UCLA is worth over 150k, especially with all the uncertainty over COVID-19
