Has Andover Changed Their Grading Scheme For College Admissions?

If you look at the GPAs almost 75% are getting 5 plus . The courses are very rigorous but the kids are doing very well

current andover student here! we still use 1-6, however, there’s been a massive shift post-covid. the average gpa of the student body reached an all time high during the pandemic and i think at some point teachers started handing out 6’s more frequently. for example, my gpa this past term (winter) was 5.67—four 6’s, two 5’s. while pretty solid, that would land me in the 2nd decile. to be in the first decile, you have to have a 5.8, which is five 6’s and only one 5

Interesting to hear. I think a lot of teachers felt compelled to inflate grades during covid, and I can’t say I blame them. If Andover is handing out straight 6s to numerous students these days, that will undoubtedly force a shift in admission strategies at the top universities when it comes to PA students.

Andover’s matriculation is impressive. Among BSs, adjusted for Andover’s size - Choate, Groton, and Hotchkiss do.

My PA grad also thinks the current averages are likely the result of COVID grading. In addition to some higher grades being given at the time, I think there was a fair amount of latitude given (in view of the circumstances) when students performed poorly. So grading was impacted on both sides. I expect this will pass.
