I do some of the book mending at the library where I work, we would probably sell a strip bo book tape for a donation if someone asked. I would suggest stopping at your local library to see if they would do that. Wouldn’t take much to cover an iphone. No, I will not do that for posters here. Sorry. It looks like the clear packing tape.

What is different about the book mending tape? Sorry to sound ignorant, but am unfamiliar…

Hi Jym,
I think it has much more tensile strength than regular clear packaging tape.

jym626 (6/26 was my parent’s wedding date, 61 years ago this year)—
book mending tape is stronger, thicker, acid-free, does not yellow or peel with age. I mended one of my daughter’s books when she was age 3 and the tape still looks great.

My d had an original Ipod, when they first came out. Same story - the glass broke within one day (it was dropped) !! When I called customer service, they actually told me that ipods weren’t meant to be carried in purses or backpacks. After a lot of talking, I got a replacement. But I was also angry b/c they had up-sold me on the insurance, telling me it covered breakage, which of course, it doesn’t.

We buy they plastic clam shell cases for all of our ipods/iphones, so that if they are dropped, the glass (hopefully) won’t break.

i am so glad to read this thread.
I drop things all the time ( carpal tunnel- plus ADD)
I was gonna get an ipod touch even though I have trouble with touch screen, small hands, but I like tactile feedback.
saved me lots of money- I ordered a battery for my 5th gen ipod instead-we will see if that works.

buy new glass on ebay and replace it yourself, it’s not hard (assuming the touch screen functionality is still working - if not, you’re out of luck)

I definitely recommend buying the flexible silicone “case” to house the iPhone in.

The pretty little iPhone beasts are so smooth and slippery that they tend to pop out of pockets while bending down, slide out of purses and slip out of your fingers. It’s part of what makes them so cool to handle and use and look at. But the silicone case is easy to grip, never slippery and it lodges the phone in your pants pocket or purse. There are various colors…

mephist0, did you actually replace the glass yourself? My H has the kit and will try to replace the cracked one someday, when he has time. Any tips you can give us on doing it right?

I can’t think of a single product I’ve owned whose warranty covered physical damage that was blatantly caused by the owner. Wouldn’t make much sense from Apple’s POV. (I’d bet they’d see a lot of “broken” iPods coming in just before warranties expire)

That being said…

I can’t say enough good things about this case. Bought it right when I got my iPhone from AT&T, and it came with both white and black rubber. It includes a clear spider-like plastic outer-casing that adds extra protection to the back and corners. And the way the silicon is molded, it fits together beautifully with the plastic.

I feel pretty confident that if I drop my phone, it’ll survive. (I’ve not once dropped it, though. I always take special care.)

AnotherAdam – Thanks for your comment, and I hope your iPhone stays in one smooth piece!!

I truly understand that warranties need not cover accidental breakage. However, when I go to AT&T and I get any other kind of phone, I can buy insurance coverage for such things as breakage, theft and loss. They will not, however, sell the same coverage for a iPhone. That is the problem.

Also, I wish I had been warned that purchasing a protective case would have been very helpful in preventing breakage. I was not even offered the option to buy a case, and it never entered my mind that my S might need one, since no one in my family had ever used a case before, and no one had ever broken a phone – 4 people in 8 years.
