Has anyone else had problems with a new Apple laptop?

I had an Apple laptop for 10 years until it slipped off the hood of my car and the side of the screen cracked. And even then I used it for months afterward as it took that long for the pixels to be affected.

I bought a new laptop, and within a couple of weeks a crack appeared on the far left side of the screen. I don’t know what caused it. And now, a couple of months later another hairline crack has appeared in the middle of the screen. Has anyone else had this problem? I’m not that tough on my laptop and hardly travel, but when I do I have a nice padded bag for it and stow it under the seat.

We have an appointment tonight at the Genius Bar.

I have had multiple MacBooks and never seen this problem. It looks like you may have received a bad unit. The warranty should cover repairs or replacement.

Good luck.

Took it in, and they are going to replace the screen and some other piece I didn’t catch. I don’t think that I’m rough with my laptop, but he talked about some behaviors that could have caused the problem, and I am guilty of those. But i did the same things with my other laptop and no problemo. Must. Be. Gentler.

such as? (I now have my husband’s hand-me-down Macbook)

He said minor things coming in contact with the screen, even if there isn’t a lot of pressure on the screen, can affect it.

I would leave the laptop charging overnight without regard to the placement of the cord, for instance. I know that there are times that I’ve closed the laptop where the cord is caught and keeps it from closing all the way. Or, I often go to bed with a podcast playing on my laptop and place my phone case on the keyboard to make sure the top doesn’t fully close so that it doesn’t stop playing on me (I set a timer so it shuts off after I fall asleep, hopefully). Anyway, I did those things with my 10yo laptop and never had a problem, but clearly new models are more sensitive.

Good to know! I’m about to replace my old MacBook with a new one.

Why not play the podcast on your phone?

I play some podcasts on my phone, but some are more visual and I’ve just gotten used to playing those on my laptop. I’m not even sure some of them are available on other platforms. I’m using “podcast” pretty loosely here; one thing I watch/listen to is a local college football show. I don’t think they are sophisticated enough to have what they do on Spotify or wherever. They certainly never reference other platforms.

I never get extended warranties, but dh ordered this Mac for me with Apple Care+. This fix was covered under the year warranty, but I think that I’m grateful that he got the three-year thing this time.

We never get warranties either, except for phone and laptops ; ).

I have a 2018 Macbook Air that isn’t always happy when I have 10 different tabs opened! Otherwise still works great until last week. For some reason it shuts down and won’t power up until plugged in when on battery, even though I am showing 80-85% battery. Battery health still shows normal, and number of cycles is still at the low level. This is not my original battery.

Have been searching online and a couple of fixes didn’t help. I don’t want to pay to have it serviced as it might be an expensive fix that isn’t worth the money on a 7 year old laptop, especially since in the Apple world, it is vintage or obsolete.

I have a local shop that is Apple certified that has serviced office and home Macs and PCs. I guess I could have them run a diagnostic test on it for about $99, but I keep eyeing a new Macbook! Costco current has it on sale, so trying to decide if I want to spend the money right now. In the meantime, I have been backing it up nightly (usually only did it monthly) in the event it fails. This is a personal computer, so nightly is more than sufficient for a backup; if I lose a meme I saved, I think I will survive!

This is exactly how I got a crack on a MacBook screen many years ago. I remember that when I got it fixed, the apple technician said that so many people experience that problem with cords that newer MacBook models had been designed with a different screen that was less prone to being damaged that way. I believe that was one or two laptops ago so I can’t remember what model it was, but I’ve never experienced that problem again (though I have occasionally closed the laptop on my cord by mistake). I’m surprised that it happened to you on a newer model. I thought that they had fixed the issue (made the screens less pressure sensitive).

that’s a memory and chip issue. (the old intel chips were crap.) The Air was not built to last 10 years, which its why it comes with a lower price point. Time to replace, particularly if you are having battery issues. You won’t regret it

@bluebayou I stopped by my independent computer repair shop, but did not speak to one of the Apple techs. While my battery is only 18 months old, it could fail, but I believe more is going on with the computer.

The new Macbook keeps calling my name, and the Costco sale only goes through Saturday. I think I will go pick one up tomorrow and mull over what I want to do, without opening it. I do have an appointment at the genius bar tomorrow, but might not keep it. I have a hard time spending a minimum of $159 on the battery, or find out it is a more involve and expensive repair for a 7 year old laptop. I would rather skip paying for a diagnostic and go ahead and get the new laptop; one that I would have to get in the next year or so anyway.

Follow-up on my Macbook. Assuming the Apple genius is telling me the truth, and he did show me pictures, the battery my independent repair shop put in was cheap, and has caused other issues. I knew it was not an Apple battery when they put it in, and it has given me 18 months without issue, but the shop is an Apple Independent Repair Provider, and should have used an Apple battery.

I don’t believe the genius had anything to gain by telling me it wouldn’t be wise to pay for a repair on a 7+ year old laptop. He did ask if I wanted to look or purchase a new one at that time; he wasn’t pushy and is a tech, not one of the sales people, so I am going to believe he was being honest.

Costco did not have the color I wanted, so I ordered one online that will arrive Tuesday. Apple Care+ is also cheaper at Costco, so feel like I got a decent deal, even with the Apple Store student discount, which they seem to offer to anyone!

Last night I spent time on Amazon looking for a new cover for the Macbook. In the past I had a clear frosted plastic so the color comes through, but my current cart has a few with a pattern. Time will tell which I like and fit well.

good choice. Enjoy your new Air.

btw: I wouldn’t expect an indie shop to use only OEM, but I would expect them to give me the choice (and savings).

Did you notice that no workers at the Apple store have covers on their devices? I asked our guy about that.

@Youdon_tsay I didn’t, but do know diehard Apple lovers prefer their phone nekkid (I am a southern gal!) While I am careful with my devices, I prefer them covered to keep them looking pristine.

@bluebayou When this battery was installed, I was told it was not a genuine Apple battery, but would have hoped it was a good quality. Of course, this may have just fallin under :poop: happens. All the years they have serviced my husbands and our office’s PCs, we have never had an issue, and they have serviced many! This was my first time taking one of my Macbooks, and most likely my last. If my memory serves me, I think the Apple store wanted to keep my computer for a few days to swap the battery, and this shop would have it back in a couple of hours. I needed it for work, which is why I went with them. I have never needed a repair on any of my Macbooks other that a warranty recall; I will use Apple in the future.

I have a Mac air, iPad, and iPhone. They are all synced. I use my Mac for work, which I never move from my desk. I use my iPad most of the time for leisure, emails, Google search, watching video, social medias.
