Has anyone had a recruited athlete be encouraged to apply RD not ED?

This happened to my daughter and someone on this thread reassured me. I think I know exactly which school you are talking about and it’s very legitimate. You will get a LL in Jan probably. I think it’s just how they manage their numbers.
Congrats btw. Great school. My daughter is a Junior and has been very happy there.
Feel free to DM me with any more questions.

Just wanted to say that in private messages we’ve confirmed it is the same school outofmydepth thought it was. He has assured me it worked out great for his daughter and it appears it has worked out fine for others too. So it appears it is just how this school operates. Now it is up to my daughter to see if she wants to live with the extra months of uncertainty or take one of her other offers that offer support through ED.

What school is this?

Reminder that this site is college CONFIDENTIAL. Posters are encouraged to share only what they are comfortable.

The OP has repeated that they do not feel comfortable disclosing the school and that’s perfectly OK.

Yeah I don’t really see the need to mention the school. They were nice enough to extend an offer to my daughter. My intent is not to disparage them. I was more trying to learn if this was common or if anyone had heard of it. Sounds like it’s not common generally but typical for this school. So now we just have to decide what to do.

Yes, that seems to me like the correct perspective.

If it helps, personally I wouldn’t worry a lot about this ED vs RD difference in this case.

Easy for me to say I know. It’s definitely nice to get the LL and wrap things up early. And in theory it allows for contingency planning if things don’t work out.

But keep in mind that the ED recruits are closing off most backup options as soon as they commit also (by informing other coaches of their decision). Some options might remain open but probably not many. And that’s probably the case with the RD app as well.

So in that sense the risk here in terms of opportunity cost isn’t all that different. I do understand it’ll likely involve more apps, and making sure to include backup plans in that strategy. Not ideal, but I suppose on the bright side there’ll be less rushing to get LORs, etc.

In any case, congrats and good luck to your recruit.

If this is her first choice, you’ll have to make a decision. If not, apply ED to the number one and if she doesn’t get in, you have this RD school.

But I’d probably go with a sure thing.

Ask the coach if your kid is their #1,2,3 priority. Sounds to me like the coach has his limited slots in ED reserved for his higher priority considerations and your kid is lower on the list. When my kid was recruited for D1 football we asked the coaches this and most were pretty honest. He was the #1 or the #5 at his position. They had money or they might have money or no money preferred walk on.

And if the coach says “you’re in our top two” that means your kid is #2.
Same thing for top 5, 8, 10 etc!

My D was offered a slot in RD by an Ivy school.

Not sure how much support was behind it though. She ended up going with an offer and ED at another school. Coach at her first choice made it sound like the RD offer may not have full support behind it but they were in sales mode too so who knows. Does anyone know if the slots held for RD carry full support like ED?

Bit of a moot point as D accepted/comitted already but I’m curious if coaches have the same amount of pull in RD vs ED.

They can, it’s situation dependent.

As always, it’s important to ask the coach the level of support being offered, and what proportion of recruits with the same level of support/round of admission have historically been accepted.

I believe Dartmouth gives coaches some slots for ED and others for RD. Impact is the same. (Or at least this has been the case in the past). Not aware of others that earmark them this way but wouldn’t be surprised if it happens.

In addition, coaches at some/most of these schools can use their slots in RD if they choose, or if unable to fill slots during ED/EA. And/or sometimes slots open up in the AD and are redistributed for special cases. Impact is the same.

But as mentioned, discussing details with the coach is best. I’d be wary of “I’ll put in a good word” types of offers without drilling down on details.

Thanks all.

Through her recruiting process I hadn’t heard of any schools having slots for anything but ED/EA until she was offered one. I was recently talking to a friend about our experience as his S is a year younger and when asked, I didn’t have a real answer for him.
