Have You Discovered Any WFH Alternative Work Spaces????

I read an article that the next big set of layoffs will be in banking. Banks have discovered that they don’t need so many layers of workers, that a few can do the work and do it remotely.

My branch opened and I do like to go in to get cash because the ATM gives $50 bills and I don’t like them. Last time I went IN there were 4 tellers and just me. The last time I went to the bank I didn’t get in. There had been gun shots in the parking lot (it’s in a strip mall) or at least someone thought he heard shots. Cops everywhere, but they let me use the ATM outside the bank. Hmm, didn’t seem safe to me! I don’t think there really was a shooting, just some old guy who reported hearing one.

The problem with relying on ATMs is that they do run out of cash, especially on Fridays or the weekend, and my 85 year old mother refuses to have an ATM card. It’s just too complicated for her.

Another WFH issue solved, and another creeps up. I was able to find a small (24x18) standing laptop desk for Little S. He’s putting it into the corner of his Media Room and will use it for Orchestra class. BUT… he also showed me that he’s completely outgrown the desk we got him this winter when the world shut down. And of course no one has any now! Everything is backordered for months.

@ChaosParent23 – check out Facebook marketplace. This summer my D found a desk and some other items for her first apartment. Desks seem to be frequently listed, but that might be b/c we are surrounded by colleges and it was summer when everyone was moving. She bought hers from a recent MBA grad headed to the west coast.

My standing desk at home (I just use a laptop) is a big plastic storage container. When I flip it there is a nice rim which protects the laptop from moving around. I just flip the container over and put it on my desk and I can stand for as long as I wish!

He wants the same desk his brother has b/c he knows he fits! LOL
Thankfully I found it on the 6th website I looked at. It’ll be here in 2 weeks. I’m shocked I found it available, and he’s thrilled!

This is a great cheap desk for anyone, but especially for long legs since it’s higher than most desks like it w/o much of a drop from the drawer. https://www.staples.com/Winsome-Velda-Writing-Desk-Antique-Walnut-94550/product_1194197

My coworker’s husband made each of their 4 kids (4th grade through senior) a desk because they were not able to locate anything good that was affordable. It is basically a piece of wood with 4 legs, but he painted and varnished each one in the color of choice and the kids are thrilled with them.

I’ve really started to feel for the families with a few kids in apartment or small house. It must make WFH and School from Home so much harder.

^I really agree with this. So much happens when coworkers interact in person. Those spur-of-the-moment conversations are instructive for the newer employees in ways that are hard to reproduce over video calls. And in my experience, after an hour or so on a Zoom call, many of us are eager to disconnect and take a break. At the office, there would sometimes be an after meeting “debrief” that would be be helpful in explaining to the newer team members why certain suggestions were made to a client versus something else. Those aren’t happening as easily now.

My D interned in the Audit group of one of the Big 4 Accounting firms in the summer of 2016 but decided she was more interested in the Emerging Markets group for her after graduation job. During the many events her company held for the interns, she was able to network with managers in that group which lead to an interview and ultimately a job offer. Same networking opportunities during that job lead to her offer at an Investment Bank. She remarked just the other day that recent grads are at quite a disadvantage right now without the same access to mentors and higher level people at their organizations. Are those disadvantages insurmountable? No, but they do make it harder.
