I didn’t like Paris at all. Had a bad experience in a restaurant, plus I thought reality didn’t live up to the hype. Everything was expensive and the streets were dirty. I’ve been to a lot of dirtier places, but these places were not hyped.
I am that tourist who loves Venice. I have usually stayed on the Westin properties, on the Venice proper and Lido. My kids used to call it surf and turf. When we stayed out in Lido we would take the ferry to Venice. I used to like to St Mark’s square very early in the morning.
I am not a fan of Florida, including Key West. My kids still say it was one of the most boring vacations. We did enjoy Disney.
I’m happy to offer suggestions for those visiting FL. Perhaps 10 years ago or more, I offered many suggestions for things to do in the Keys.
Re Cape Cod-- consider visiting Nantucket ot Martha’s Vineyard instead. I don’t love the Cape at all, but do love those islands.
My brother and his wife (he’s a VERY avid fisherman with big boats in Michigan and one a little smaller he keeps at Key West. They love going down there and go at least 3x a year for 2-4 weeks. I’m sure of course - like any state - there are areas that would suit me better. It’s just the overall vibe, house styles, landscape, etc. that doesn’t work for me. For me, a palm tree looks so much better on the west coast. (ducking tomatoes!)
Clearly, LOTS of people love the panhandle state though!
Places I don’t get why people like: Vegas, and LA. NYC (though I did get it when I was younger-just not my thing for more than a day or two). The Cape. Nope. Years ago it was desolate (most seasons), now over run and too much traffic. The beauty is gone and the water is still freezing. Truro is still beautiful. Go to the islands if you can afford it.
Places that I think everyone should love: Iceland, everything is amazing, Switzerland, Greece, Italy, Croatia, Western Canada, New Zealand and Acadia. ( you can safely assume I like natural beauty over touristy traps).
I’m heading for Venice in a few weeks and no concerns about what to do or crowds. I love parks in Paris, but if I want to stop, it’ll be for an espresso or Aperol Spritz at a cafe. Preferably, one with locals, not tourists. I’ll mostly be by myself for the first day, might meet a friend for dinner. No issues.
I’ve never understood what you can do in the Rockies except for Mountain stuff. Lol.
Cape in the summer is just not worth it for a quick vacation unless you’re staying in Chatham Wellfleet Truro or P town. And drive in at 2am and leave at the same time. The islands are great too. September is off the charts good.
But I would visit Rhode Island. Newport or Watch Hill in heartbeat over the Cape. And Coastal Maine is off the charts too. Just a bit chilly. And skip old orchard beach.
@Publisher, I just took my daughter and her friend to Clearwater for four days and it was pretty and fun (though four days was enough). I will say this as not a big Florida fan (especially the overdevelopment) and I’m no longer a fan of heat (though I spent many years in the tropics).
We had taken a more ambitious trip this summer but daughter was pining for a short beach trip before full-time band camp starts and hogs the rest of the summer. Picked Clearwater simply because a tiny regional airport one hour from us just started to offer cheap commercial flights (Its ONLY commercial flights) to Myrtle Beach, Orlando, Tampa and Clearwater/Saint Pete…it was a no-brainer for me given that our other beach options are to drive quite a few hours through lots of traffic to Mid-Atlantic beaches or drive 2+ hours to the closest fully-functioning urban airports. So we went on a whim and had a great time. Didn’t rent a car…could walk most everywhere. Predictably, it was quite HOT and HUMID but no problem in the water or under a beach umbrella most of the time (though, yeah, the water was bathwater warm too!) Granted, much of my fun was watching 16-year-olds have fun (I would not have gone for myself though maybe I’d go in October). The water WAS clear, glassy greenish bluish, seashells abundant, the palm trees and other tropical landscaping nicely done (daughter’s friend had never been on a plane, let alone a place with palm trees) and the community pier at sunset a memorable outing. I’m sure there are more beautiful (siesta key?) or exclusive places to go in Florida/Caribbean, but it fit the bill nicely for our purposes.
My preference? These days, a place with with a nip in the air. But I’m glad we went. I just like to travel!
Somebody earlier suggested Amsterdam over Venice. Amsterdam is struggling with the effects of too many tourists.
^^No kidding.
I wish every place would ban those beer bikes!
So stupid. Sadly, saw one in Seattle… Hope it gets nipped in the bud.
There’s one beer bike here but no one is allowed to actually drink while riding it-- they apparently stop at various bars. They don’t cause much trouble and the people riding it seem to be having a good time.
Would “cruises” be an acceptable answer even though it is not technically a place?
If so, my answer is “cruises”.
Oooh, good one. Yes, it counts, and I agree.
What places do people love? I cold use a more uplifting post today as I head off to the funeral of a friend’s daughter. 9 pages of what people don’t like is hard to bear (and yes I know I could have skipped the thread). Right now I thinking about fun, enjoyable places would be nice. For me, I loved seeing glaciers and the natural beauty. Loved whale watching and playing with dogsled puppies.
Please start a separate discussion.
I think there was a previous discussion about best places at some point.
Some people have love/hate relationships with locations.
