Hazing Scandal: Rolling Stone Edition

The article cited in post #2 above is really excellent. All I can say is that if Reitman bought Lohse’s BS about everyone being a wealthy, entitled, I-banker wannabee, she is a complete fool.

But I doubt that she is a complete fool, and I doubt that she really bought it. I think she is a cynical liar who knows precisely what carefully pruned version of the “facts” will sell to her target market. It is quite possible that she justifies it to herself because it suits her personal prejudices.

This is not to say that the fraternity or social scene in general at Dartmouth or Duke or any other college is without negative behaviors–How many times have people bemoaned the negative effects of binge drinking and the hookup culture on some young people?–and I strongly agree that those behaviors should be rooted out. Without being foolish enough to point to Greeks as the root of all evil, as I’ve said before, I’d be happy to see D have residential colleges or something similar and no fraternities or sororities.

BTW, I know people whose visiting HS seniors have been treated to scenes of debauchery including drunken, vomiting hosts at Greek-free campuses including Bowdoin and Middlebury.
