Well, I am sad to say my D did not feel all that comfortable after a tour at Spelman. I really wanted her to want that experience, but she just didn’t “get it”. She has spent her whole life in an environment that may be similar to yours ( but a small Chrisitan school, not at all “preppy”), and on West Coast where I think money matters more than race.I think she needs to take it a little slower.

I grew up in a Black middle class neighborhood, attended pretty diverse HS in New York, and had lots of cultural opportunities but nothing prepared me for the emporement I felt at Howard and in DC. I visited my sister there during homecoming when I was a senior, came home, cut off my permed hair for a “TWA” ( teeny weeny afro), packed my bags and essentially dropped out of HS to enroll at Howard. ( I guees I had what I need to graduate…NY schools were so crowded then you couldn’t even get a seat on the “radiator” ( I’ve haven’t seen one since leaving) if you didn’t hurry.
