Health Insurance Conundrum

Best wishes to all of our young adults who have had health concerns! It’s sad we even have to have discussions about how to get affordable, adequate coverage for ourselves and our families without trade-offs in terms of coverage, cost and risk.

I would double check to make sure she can’t get COBRA. My daughter had a two-month gap after finishing business school and was able to get COBRA.

I saw ACA was mentioned and I haven’t finished reading all the posts. I am not 100%, but you may want to check whether you actually have to pay for the whole month. For the past year, I paid ACA for my kid and mine. When she started college, I bought the college plan for her and withdrew her from ACA in the middle of the month. They BCBS “refunded” me, not that they sent me a check, but in the following month, they told me I had a credit on my account because my kid withdrew from the plan in the middle of the month.

Most insurers have to give you a pro rata reduction in premium in rate based on duration of coverage.

Ooh, that’s good to know, since DS is leaving on January 19!

We bought S insurance on a monthly basis, starting from the date his U insurance ended, mid-month. They charged us for just the portion of the month he wasn’t covered by it and then full months Sept-Dec.
