Please educate yourself regarding the 59 day rule associated with HIPAA rules and regs. As long as you sign up for coverage within that time frame after your continuous coverage ends, any prexisting conditions (known or unknown-such as cancer) cannot be held against you under the new policy. After that time frame, even if you sign up for good insurance, stuff can be held against you.

Also, COBRA benefits are the same as under your old policy and it is not for someone who can’t get insurance any other way, we used it when I switched jobs and it is exactly the same policy, it’s just that you are paying the full premium that used to be offset by the employer.

^^^yes, MamaDrama is right. You are getting some misinformation here from others. COBRA by law means the SAME benefits you had only YOU pay for the coverage. Do not let any time lapse, so there is no coverage lapse. If you continue COBRA, it gives you time to make decisions about other plans. I would sign up for it. You can always cancel or change. You have to be sure you do within 59 days.

DO CHECK TO SEE IF HE STILL QUALIFIES as a dependent until age 30. You are in FLORIDA. But if your plan does not originate in Florida, it may not be mandated by the new Florida Law.

Finally, Assurant Health is a leader in temporary health plans, and insure ALOT of students between graduation and jobs.https://www.temporaryinsurance.com/stm/(1feun345hiezy255caz1wcim)/GetQuote/

And I mentioned above but it is worth mentioning again: CoverFlorida http://www.coverfloridahealthcare.com/

Great, thank you for all the information. His coverage ends July 31, 2009, when he turns 25. Our current plan did originate in New York State. H and I both retired from New York State employment in 1990 and only use H’s employment in Florida for family vision and dental. Kept the Empire Plan insurance. Son has no known preexisting conditions. But I know how quickly things can change. I’ll look into each option above. I knew I could find help here. Thank you.

Assuming that the Gov does very little on Universal Health Ins.

DS has been on this new job for just a few month. He does have health ins as a benefit.
Should DS, continue on a private ins policy as a supplement to his employer’s ins and as a plan in case this job does not work out or disappears due to budgets?? His group health is considerably less expensive than his HSA plus his savings dollars. He could go to a lesser personal plan and still be ahead in overall dollars And have insurance for all circumstances. ???
