Health Insurance Question about 24 year old child getting married--does marriage end coverage?

All insurance cover what’s mandated by ACA. My current employer offers vision and dental to my kids until they are 26, but my previous employer only offered medical. The insurance will not extend to one’s grandchildren. The question is if your insurance would cover your D’s pregnancy (my gut tells me yes, but better to verify).

ACA-compliant insurance is required to cover maternity benefits. If your child under 26 gets coverage under your ACA-compliant insurance, she gets full coverage, including maternity. However, her children, your grandchildren, probably will not be covered.

We kept our D1 on my employer-sponsored family health insurance coverage until age 26, even though she married at 24. Not a problem. The insurance company notified her prior to her 26th birthday that she’d be cut off when she reached 26, so she signed up for individual coverage through the exchange beginning then. You get a special enrollment period when you turn 26.

No problem with grandkids as D1 and her husband decided not to have kids until they’re more financially stable.

D2, now just about to turn 24 and currently a grad student and single, is still on my employer-sponsored health insurance. She’ll turn 26 in 2021, DW will become Medicare-eligible in 2022, and I’ll retire shortly thereafter.

“In addition, large group plans are not required to provide maternity coverage for dependent children, which has become more significant now that adult children can remain on their parents’ plans through age 26. The National Women’s Law Center filed a discrimination complaint about this in June 2013. In May 2015, HHS announced that plans must cover preventive care — including prenatal care — for dependents, but there is still no requirement that dependents be covered for labor and delivery costs.”

CTTC is right. ACA-compliant individual insurance policies have to cover maternity costs for under-26 adult children on their parent’s insurance. But it looks like all self-insured employer insurance, and large-group employer insurance, are not required to cover labor and delivery for under-26 adult children.

Thanks @CTTC.
