My pug Phillip had to wear the dreaded cone awhile back and I researched the alternatives at length before buying a Cuddle Cone. Comfort and effectiveness were the most important criteria for me, and this e-collar worked out great for our needs:

FWIW, when our cat needed surgery last year our regular vet said she’d use the Elizabethan collar. Ended up using the breeder’s vet who said that it wasn’t necessary. 4 days later, we had a very ill animal who had managed to eat away all his stitches, had an open incision in his belly and needed a second round of surgery to remove the infected tissue. Needless to say our regular vet did that surgery & poor little guy had the collar on for a good 10 days.

I know it’s a pain for all, but better safe than sorry.

This thread is 2 1/2 years old so hopefully the OP’s dog isn’t still wearing a cone. It looks like maybe an advertiser responded to this thread just now (‘jensnow’).

As my Golden needs to have a bump taken off his leg, timely that this thread has popped to the top… CC just knows when we need to know something :)

Our vet provided something like the Procollar for our lab when she had a tumor removed from her upper leg about a year ago. She didn’t love it, but it was still much better than the cone. Easier to handle, and really more comfortable for her. She had to wear it for almost two weeks, much to her dismay.

There are a variety of items on the market, some nice E-collars in attractive designs, some soft E-collars, Kong makes something they call a Cloud Collar, which is probably either a licensed or knocked off ProCollar.

I’m going to plug your LOCAL INDEPENDENT PET STORE over big box pet and suggest you go in and ask for help.

Nope, I’m not an advertiser. Just a dog lover and soon-to-be empty nester about to send my only son off to college:( I actually stumbled into this thread in the Parent Cafe, so it must still be a popular thread. Hopefully all of the suggestions will be helpful to whomever looks here for help (not just the OP). Just sharing what worked for me, but every dog is different. I am particularly enjoying reading about the homemade options, and may try some of those one day.

I clicked on the jensnow’s designer E-collar link. There is a picture of a cat in there in one of those collars. It looks like she is wearing a colorful lampshade. Cool stuff. Definitely looks sturdier and more attractive than the plastic option. Hey, made in the USA!
