Help!! Bad score on SSAT and applying to Lick WIlmerding. Chance me?

@mh2005 I just wanted to circle back and acknowledge your thoughtful apology. You are a kid – making mistakes and then learning from them is exactly what you are supposed to do, so don’t be hard on yourself. And, the irony of your father using the exact same word you did! (Apple, meet tree!) Don’t be too hard on him either. You are doing great, and I imagine he truly just wants the best for you. I am sure your future is bright, and I’m eager to follow along on your journey. Happy New Year!

LIck Wilmerding is a wonderful school. But it’s not the only one. I doubt your scores will hold you back. Listen to @CaliMex on this! It’s not just about scores!

Hopefully, you have more than this one on your list

Just curious??
What score is NOT a failure for you?
I’ve never heard 9#% to be a failure. On any type of exam

@bantonov haha, my parents are hard on me so 99% is kind of the expectation

ALL of the top schools, including Lick Wilmerding, REJECT students with scores in the 99th percentile in favor of more compelling applicants with far lower test scores.

Alot/invest your time accordingly.

@mh2005 I’m glad you could come on here and get some perspective! Your parents love you and want the best for you, but it is also good to get a reality check.

I too come from a high achieving immigrant family, but somehow I’ve embraced the perspective that as long as you try hard, and work hard, and have done the best you can, then the outcome doesn’t matter. You’ve done your best, and that’s all you can do.

Your problem is not your score and how it affects Lick-Wilmerding admission. Your problem is your parents. I know it’s hard now, because you are completely dependent on them and have to live with them. But their attitude is HORRENDOUS. I’m a parent of a middle schooler and a high schooler here in San Francisco. I’d never, ever come down on my kids for their scores. Especially a 93! My son got an 89 (with a 99 math), and we were thrilled for him.

Reserve some part of yourself away from their overbearing attitudes, and nurture that for one day when you’re out of the house. A favorite line of mine from Cheap Trick’s song Surrender:

“Surrender, surrender, but don’t give yourself away”
