Help chance a senior :) [International, Middle Eastern, Mechanical Engineering] [4.0 GPA, 650M/730RW SAT, need FA/scholarships]

I don’t particularly either, but it’s okay!

I think that this community can sometimes doomsday this whole process (which, fair), but I have awesome options here in the region too (The American University in Cairo, NYU Abu Dhabi, Carnegie Melon Qatar, Cornell Qatar, etc. etc. etc. Even most of the local schools have international collaborators & wonderful communities)

Studying in the US would be incredible if I get lucky. I’ll be closer to my family, get the opportunity to branch out & grow & learn, but I know I can do that wherever I end up

You still haven’t provided a budget. What does significant aid mean?

There are schools you can apply to in the US that you will get in.

But you gave only top names.

If you want to come to the US, we have thousands of colleges, many ABET accredited for engineering.

First thing - share how much you can spend per year?

It definitely is, yes. Unfortunately it’s a hard major to find, especially in schools that offer 100% of demonstrated need to international admits

Most of the MechE programs have design concentrations, prod dev minors, etc. So that was kinda my thought process there

My budget is around $15-20k

All of the schools on my list say they do!

My post is mainly about which school is most closely aligned with my profile, & again I know my test scores are pretty low & that test optional is unfavourable especially for an international engineering applicant, but I can still attempt to be strategic

If you can get up $10K more or so, then Alabama could work. It’s a well known name.

South Dakota State has MechE. It shows $25.3K COA . You’d get $4K merit so low 20s. I know, middle of nowhere but it’s ABET accredited in MechE. Slippery Rock in PA is also low cost for MechE.

These are the kind of schools to look at for affordability.

But don’t forget, there is travel expense too etc.

Sorry, I was going through the replies one by one, I replied to your earlier comment

The reason why is because:

I chose my list based on the universities’ guarantee to meet 100% of admitted international students’ need. Other than an opportunity like that, I don’t see how I’d be able to afford school in the US

Very fair. Give it a try but yes, plan for overseas.

If you really want to go to school in the US and you can get a little more money, you can get an ABET accredited degree. But yes, it sounds like it would be a strain.

Pretty much exactly why my list is the way it is unfortunately

The majority of the schools here offer ABET accredited engineering degrees! All the ones I mentioned + a lot of the local schools

Although I’m very stressed trying to get everything done, I’m extremely grateful for all the options around me:)

I think you need to do some more research into these. Some are highly specialized and do not offer undergraduate mechanical engineering engineering degrees. Cornell Qatar, for example, is a branch of the Cornell Medical school.

And some of these (NYU Abu Dhabi for example) have even lower admit rates than the US campuses.

Yep I know! I’m speaking generally, well known US satellite branches

I never said they weren’t reaches, but they’re a bit less oversaturated.

I have backups & safeties, this isn’t really what I’m asking about

Just wanted to make sure you know that the “backups” you’ve listed here aren’t really viable backups.

Glad to hear you have other options outside of what you’ve listed.

@Janaglobal you win the prize for being a good sport, and having the best attitude on CC today. Kudos to you.
