That is a very awkward sentence. If you remove the commas and Riley, you’ll find that the sentence reads “Leader of his team helped his team.” I know it’s an example, but you remove what is between the commas to see if the sentence reads correctly.
For example,
“Riley, leader of team Bravo, helped set the table.”
The sentence reads correctly when the appositive is removed: “Riley helped set the table”
