Help! I'm addicted ... to HGTV.

I thought my H (the ultimate DIYer) was the only one that does that! Our textured drywall ceilings ‘sagged’ because the builder didn’t put enough screws in to hold them up. So in two of the worst rooms (bedrooms) H put in some screws and refinished the entire ceiling with drywall mud, making it smooth. What an ordeal!

I know he would love to do more of them, but there are other options: (1) don’t look up (2) cover the screw heads with something decorative like those astronomy star stickers (3) move to a new house with acceptable ceilings.

DontPanic … re: popcorn ceilings. We will someday have to do our upstairs hallway ceiling and the whole living room, which is a contemporary with a roof line that is really tall. After the 2nd bathroom of popcorn, I think he is game to just hire the big guns to do the living room and adjacent hallway. I’m waiting for Holmes to show me what we did wrong!

Did you guys know that the ‘popcorn’ can just be scraped off? At least, that’s what the pros do. :)

My House Hunter pet peeve (along the lines of “I really hate the scripted comments by the homeowners and/or the potential buyers”) is the fact that everyone is looking for a space that is “great for entertaining”. I often feel like I’m the only one willing to cook for my friends. (Maybe I need to find some new ones. ;))

^^^^That is a line we make jest of ALL the time in our house!

I am surprised/perplexed when wall color is the off-putting element for people looking at houses. Granted, “cosmetic” is a term that can cover some very expensive changes (we learned that the hard way). But paint, unless one is unwilling to wet a roller, is not one of them.

I did read on the internet that popcorns ceilings can be scraped off if 1) you know for sure there is not asbestos in it, and 2) you are willing to do a some additional spackling once all the dots are off. I don’t think I want to scrap the dots off my 2-story living room ceiling, and I certainly don’t want to witness my husband’s choice words when he’s doing it either! But if you have done it successfully, let me know what you did to ensure the right amount of moisture without having to do a ton of post-scraping touch up.
