HELP ----Is Cal Berkeley Worth 60k-70k in Student Debt VS No loans or Debt at a Lower School ? ? ? ?

No room/board for CSU Fullerton is around $14K/year. Add tuition of $7K/year plus books etc… estimate at least $21K+/year on campus, UCB would be $33K/year for on-campus. A difference of $10K+/year.

UCB Haas is not a direct admit as a Freshman so no guarantee that he will get in.

If you are considering the community college to UC route you should take a look at is the transfer admit rate for business at the various UC campuses. In 2015 for Berkeley for example the transfer admit rate for Business Administration was 5%. Here’s a link so you can look at the possibilities.

gosh. that’s a tough one. CAL is a phenomenal school but without knowing your financial particulars i would lean towards CSF because he would be able to cover his yearly expenses with the Stafford Loans. if you have to borrow beyond the Stafford amount i think your are getting to far into gambling with your financial future. then again i tend to lean very far towards frugality and caution.

keep in mind that it’s easy for people to advise your son to choose Cal as long as it’s not their money and their debt.

If he would be commuting to CSF anyway, I’d seriously consider two years at CC then transfer to one of the UCs. He might not get into Cal again but if he was able to make the grades to get in this time he has an excellent shot at getting into one of the top UCs or CalPoly SLO as a transfer.

He is getting in this time with the help of the Coaching staff as a Recruited Athlete. So if he is going to go to CAL now would be the time.

Do you think he can make it academically at Cal, along with doing Track?

What would he do for a major if he didn’t make it into Haas?

How strong are his academics? Does the athletic program help with tutoring etc? What does he want to do? So what is the cost difference, and can your family handle? Are there other children to consider that also need to be educated - so able to swing financially while doing a ‘fair’ thing with siblings?

When Cal had him come up on there Jr Recruiting day last year. We were Very Impressed with the Academic support that they have for the athletes and they have a Academic advisor assigned by the team that keeps watch and assigns tutoring and anything needed to help the athlete stay on course. he has a weighted high school GPA of 3.74 doing track and yearbook photo editor.

@philbegas

I think getting into Haas is after his first 4 years and UG right? You can not get into Haas as a UG? or am I wrong on this?

I would most likely Major in Business as a UG or maybe Bio.

Haas has undergraduate programs.

What are the other Tier 2 options? 25K total over 4 years in loans is doable. I completely agree, the commute is to far to consider as a realistic commuting option.

@eandesmom

The other schools are not in the same Realm. most are small NAIA and D2 schools on the midwest and then there is Cal Poly Pomona and CSF. So CAL is by far the best school by a long shot.

How much for CPP?

Cal Poly Pomona would be about 20k for 4 years living at home driving 15 miles each way.

And if he were to live on campus he would have to take loans out for it?

Yes if he was going to live on campus it would be about 20k for 4 years in loans

So if he were to live on campus, Cal Poly is around 40k in loans, and Fullerton is around the same right?

@philbegas

Both Cal Poly Pomona and CSF would be about 20k in loans total to live on Campus. CAL would be about 60k in loans total.

@philbegas I sent you a DM.

I just saw your DM - I don’t know specific answers to questions about the exact timeframe but everybody has to apply to Haas after completing pre-requisites

If your child had some “help” getting into UC Berkeley - then perhaps they are not diligent enough to get high grades and get into Haas for business? It’s one of the top business schools in the country.
