Help Me Find A Men's WARM Coat!

Nordstrom’s semi-annual sale for men is on. This might be too lightweight, but some reviewers said it was ok for NH and NY:

Cold Haan has a sale going on as well (on their website). This one looks nice for a young man:

Hi gourmetmom:

The link that you sent for J Crew…it’s a handsome looking coat, but it does show a back vent. Many coats come that way, but my S just prefered one without a back vent. I’m just saying there are options so that when abasket’s S goes looking, he can choose what he likes and hopefully find what he’s looking for this time if year!

I agree about finding a nice coat without puffiness! ;)

If he will be doing a significant amount of walking he really will want a parka type jacket with a hood. I would suggest finding a Columbia store outlet and looking at a Mountain Hardware parka. Just bought one for a student in Cleveland and he LOVES it. Or look online at Columbia.

Columbia has Mens Portage Long Down Jacket $250…sorry I can’t link. I know he doesn’t think he wants a puffy jacket, but Chicago in January…brrrrr…

Eddie Bauer downlight jacket. Less than a lb. feels super light . I feel warm when it’s. 15 degrees . I’m not a coat guy and love this jacket

It seems like he’d want something with a hood, with material that blocks the wind. I liked the link for Lands End Squall Parka.

I bought H a 3-way parka from Uniqlo for xmas. Its a waterproof shell with a down liner that can be worn separately & has a zip off hood. The shell is much dressier than the down jacket.
Its looks like the site is now into " spring" clothes.

In that case, Id look at Eddie Bauer.

Don’t mean to hijack the thread but I’m in NYC for the week and forecasts say it is due to be 3F lowest on thursday, which is absolutely insane. I can’t even fathom that cold. Everyone on the street is already wearing down jackets in the 30’s and 40’s, what do people here in the northeast wear when it gets to below 10F?? I’m thinking of staying indoors the entire day that day.

Layer.
Keep your feet, head & hands warm & dry.
Did you bring long underwear?

No. The thing is there is only so much you can layer…i’ve been wearing 4 layers, thick wool peacoat on the outside, then fleece jacket, then two sweater/knit on the inside. Plus scarf, gloves, and boots. Curious what else there is to wear when temperatures dip another 30 degrees, besides a better coat like a down.

My S’s like REI for jackets (Mountain Hardware ,Marmot, Columbia, Patagonia, etc).

tiennyx3–not to be flippant, but you are in NYC. Just walk faster and then you will warm up! Assuming that doesn’t work, can you take the subway where you need to travel and then only walk a short distance to your destination?

Thursday should be OK, but cold at night. Friday’s forecast looks brutal and now they are forecasting four to eight inches of snow. If you were cold today when it was quite nice, you could be in trouble Friday.

It sounds as though you have all the correct layers, so there really isn’t much else to add. A long down coat would be helpful but probably not something you want to own for only one or two cold days. Hope you are enjoying NYC.

Have loved seeing all the warm jacket suggestions. I bought one of those two or three in one jackets from the North Face outlet for my college-bound son. He will be in shock when he encounters his first upstate NY winter.

The current forecast for NYC is 39F on Thursday, with lows of 19f on Sat.
But sunny.
Ive gone xcountry skiing with temps in the upper/low teens. Ok as long as you are moving and you have your nose and mouth covered.( I have exercise asthma & cold exacerbates it) I dont wear much cause you can really get hot.
Im always taking my hat and gloves off, then putting them back on again.
I wore a fleece lined shell, not down, although I do carry a down vest.
Temps are usually in mid 20’s when we go skiing. Keeps the snow nice and fluffy.
Xcountry skiing you are also outside for * hours*, unlikely to be outside that long in the city.

I was just thinking about digging out dh’s old Navy pea coat out for our son to try on.

Not sure if I’d suggest a Navy pea coat for a college kid in Chicago though. People would likely think the kid is really in the Navy and in boot camp/ A school at Great Lakes.

I have a pea coat that was Ds, that I wear when doing restoration work.
Its more durable than wearing down, and it is still warm when it is wet.

Pea coats were the thing for high school girls a few years ago, they are classic, but now everyone is wearing colorful patagonia down.(both men & women- but I am in PNW)

We were in Chicago twice in 2013 and we saw a LOT of young adults wearing all sorts of coats to keep warm, men AND women. So much depends on personal preference. Last Christmas, I bought S 5 different coats because the one he has is very thin and not warm. He tried them all on but none of them fit. He much prefers slim fitting, tailored things, but has a hard time finding his size. Macy’s did have quite a nice selection and their prices were quite reasonable. I think tailored men’s wool coats look very nice, but have seen a lot of folks who like down to keep warmer (under a windproof layer).

Went to college and worked for a few years in Mikwaukee, plus spent lots of time in Chicago on business. Forget fashion and focus on function, as they do in the Midwest. I personally layer a thick Columbia fleece topped by an EMS goretex rain jacket. Until recently, I felt you gave up something with the pre-matched zip together system.

Waterproof, lined footwear is a must, along with thick wool socks.

PS - nor sure where folks not in the NYC area are getting their weather forecasts, however, it’s expected tobe below 0f before sunrise Saturday morning. Some of the coldest weather we’ve had in several years. And I will be at the Rutgers pool at 7am for a swim meet…yeah
