No AC is no big deal. But… No heat?! I dunno. Sounds like a slumlord situation.
Yep all units rented out most have fixed heating available in California. Now having said that, I rarely turn on the heat. Maybe 30 days out of the year max.
Hmmm… I thought it sounded weird. I’ll let him know.
Generally H and I pack one pair of slacks and wear a pair of jeans or slacks. We also pack a bunch of shirts/tops, down vest, down jacket, underwear, pjs, socks, thermals if we will be cold, wool undershirts & tshirts. I also pack some scarves. We also bring medicines and that’s about it. We may bring a change of footwear but often just wear comfortable walking shoes that we wear everywhere. Everything fits in a 2 wheeled roller board bag that fits in the overhead bin and a small backpack as my personal item.
I have the same packing cubes as @BunsenBurner in post #32. I bought mine at the Container Store and also REI. I like the give in the mesh, they open quite easily and are well made. I have 2 sets.
I think these are the packing cubes I like. We also have another brand, but I like these best

“I would not bring sweaters that aren’t wool…”
This absolutely cracked me up. For me like many people wool is a torture device. And yeah I’ve tried your “ but it’s a super soft type of wool” items. Um no. Just no. Like not ever.
One pair of shoes, just one comfortable pair of shoes. There are a lot of hills to walk. I always pack light these days.
I tend to run hot all the time so barely own any sweaters (thanks, Marie Kondo!). I’m also having trouble trying to imagine feeling cold enough for a sweater if it’s 50 or above, but if it’s windy I get it.
I do have a short puffer coat so will keep my fingers crossed that it’s warm enough here to wear that to the airport instead of my usual knee length Sherpa lined super heavy coat.
Wow this thread took off fast. gotta catch up— and the packing cubes are on their way. Decided against buying large b/c am trying to do carryon, and can try to use ziploc bags for big stuff.
@psychmomma - don’t let the 50 degree temperature fool you. It will be damp and it does feel cold. We have heat here in Southern California (no air) close to the ocean, but only use it a bit in the morning to take the chill off as our temperatures are pretty mild most of the time.
I suggest you get an appointment and have the doctor prescribe something like Xanax for the flying anxiety. My H travels a lot for work, but doesn’t care for small planes so always has Xanax to take the edge off if he has to fly in one.
@psychmomma …the worst part of flying is the dreading before hand. Once you are in the air, you will be fine…think positive! And do take your ipad (& charger). A great distraction…and many planes do not have entertainment systems anymore.
I went to Europe for three weeks with carryon. You have gotten great advice above. Your puffer jacket, black pants, jeans, leggings, tops & sweaters for layering, 2-3 pair comfy shoes and a scarf …you will be fine. Enjoy! Keep us posted.
And get your son some heat!
I took one carry-on for a week in DC last month. Even given the extra bulk of winter clothing, it all fit into a standard roll aboard. One pair of shoes (on my feet) - these were Clark’s short boots Cloud Walkers or Comfort something, I don’t remember but they were very good for comfort and walking and looked great with pants. Then three pair of black slacks in varying weights (for whatever temperatures), a variety of layered sweaters and camisoles, a cashmere scarf, a rain jacket, socks and undergarments. And I still had things I could have done without.
Does anyone take or wear jewelry when they travel? I usually wear lots of silver rings, but am guessing they would be a hassle at the airport.
@TatinG - I love Clark shoes and almost bought some short boots recently. I may go take another look.
@psychmomma …jewelry is my downfall. I love it. I take lots and have really been trying to pare down. Yet I know I probably still take more than the average.
I only take it on the plane. If I don’t do carryon, it’s in my small backpack. I think it would be just too easy to steal. When I went through airport security once, I had to take it out. The gal asked me if I made jewelry. LOL! It was sort of embarrassing to say, no, it’s just my luggage. I wear my heaviest necklace, which is typically the Sims Stone one.
I separate everything and put in a baggie, the extra small one for snacks. After I do that with everything, I put it all in a gallon bag. It’s ridiculous, but I just love my earrings and necklaces. I typically only take a couple bracelets and rings, though.
Haha that’s funny, do you make jewelry! I can make do with a minimal amount but I love to wear 4 or 5 rings lol. And two necklaces together.
@conmama - invest in a jewelry roll.

I never wear any jewelry other than the platinum band, earrings, and pendant, but kiddo likes her stuff and swears by her bling roll.
@showmom858 today is not the day to tell @psychmomma that 50 degrees is cold @-) (She’s in Chicago)
Pack your sense of humor.
I wear my every day jewelry (rings, earrings, necklace) when traveling, unless I’m going to a wedding/bar mitzvah when I will wear something other than my every day stuff. I throw it in a jewelry pouch and put it in my carry on.
