On the TSA website, you can find info on what’s permissible in carryons & where they need to go. Liquids and creams have to go in the quart bag.
^ I did look at that list. Very helpful.
Hopefully my last silly question: on my driver’s license I have long black hair. I now irl have short gray/white hair. Will that matter? My chubby old face is the same. Lol. Should I bother to bring my passport (with current hair)?
DL should be fine unless you’re from a state that is not Real ID compliant and did not file for an extension. If that’s the case you will need a passport.
If it were me, I’d bring it just in case.
Haha up until last year when I decided to update my DL to be Real compliant, I had recycled a picture from 20 or 25 years ago when I was rocking the look. Sadly, Father Time took away all that hair. Interestingly enough, Costco still uses pretty much that same picture, so I still have memories of yesteryear. Having said that, it’s always good to bring your passport just in case.
I’d take passport as a backup. On a recent trip to Vegas, I accidentally dropped my drivers license into the return hotel key slot. During my initial panic I was able to calm down when I remembered I had my passport along to get through TSA. After I was calm, I found a manager who opened the drop box and found my drivers license. But it was a lesson to always have a backup.
RealID is only supposed to be required in late 2020, but there may be confusion at some places, so it’s helpful to have an extra ID (like a passport), just in case, as long as you keep it secure. Have a great trip!
I walk through SF most days and I would pack (I’m a 43 year old mom):

-black leggings
-black riding boots (with low heel very comfortable to walk in)
-North face fleece
-North face puffy jacket
-A couple of Athleta sweaters which are slightly longer
-Running tights, sports bra, running shoes
-Short but comfortable booties
-A couple super soft Athleta long sleeved tops
-An Athleta super soft drapey cardigan
-Super soft infinity scarf in a blush/grey tones goes with almost everything
-A couple of pairs of Marisa Maison brass earrings
-Marisa Maison brass cuff
-Viv and Ingrid beaded hoops
-Viv and Ingrid beaded delicate necklace
Leather cross body purse from Sundance
I just want to echo what @Momofadult suggested: watch what people ahead of you in the TSA line are doing so you’re prepared when it’s your turn (you can also read the rules ahead of time). Of course, if you slow the line down, you don’t need to feel badly or worry about what other people think but, at least for me, I’d prefer not to slow the line down! So, know you’ll need to slip off your shoes (so wear socks – I like to anyways because, otherwise my ankles get cold on the plane), remove your computer, ipad, sweater, metal/heavier watch, quart size baggie with liquids, etc. Laptop needs to go in a separate bin. I have precheck so I’m not sure I’m remembering everything since I don’t do any of this anymore but, before I did, I liked to have everything that needed to be removed packed in a way that made it easy to pull out/take off.
Also, you’ll need to show your ID and boarding pass as the first step. If I have a secure back pocket, sometimes as we pull up to the airport, I slip my DL in my back pocket so it’s handy and one less thing to fumble for. I also have my boarding pass saved to my apple wallet (or have taken a screen shot so it’s my last photo) so it’s also handy in an instant. I slip my phone in the outside pocket of my “personal item” bag.
In other words, just give some thought as to the easiest way for you to comply with the TSA process.
Finally, the likelihood that you’ll need your passport as a second form of ID bc the first could be rejected is low but, if you have a current passport, and it will bring you peace of mind, bring it!
Happy travels!
One last thing: either as soon as you make it through screening or once you’re at your gate, put your DL back where iit belongs!
@FlyMeToTheMoon, what an experience to tell about - after the event! This has not happened to me, but I can imagine it completely, along with the initial panic. I’m getting better at dealing rationally with the inevitable travel screw ups, but I know I would have reacted in pure “kick myself”, give me a re-do, HELP mode.
Yeah, we had an issue where H couldn’t find his ID anywhere and TSA had it. We had to pay an extra handling fee for them to mail it back–it was about $20 or something but easier than trying to figure out how to go and claim it and then have it mailed back. Didn’t want to try bothering with applying for any duplicate ID. It was a major hassle and they NEVER paged him to try to give it back. Maybe they only found it at the end of a shift? Who knows, but it was definitely very inconvenient!
@TheFrenchChef those jewelry designers are new to me, but their work is going on my wish list! Are the Marisa Mason brass earrings heavy?
@yauponredux I have one pair of her brass earrings (the ones called ‘Waters Medium’) and they are not heavy at all. I’ve been wanting a pair of her hoops for a long time, might get them this weekend
She is local to me, but I see her stuff in boutiques when I travel now all the time…
Her work is really, really beautiful - I can’t recommend her highly enough!
