I’m going to try Sling for the Olympics to get extra coverage. One of their plans ($25/month for that one) includes NBCSN. My new 4K TV has the Sling app on it already, so I don’t think I need a Fire stick or Roku or anything like that. No contract, so easy to cancel after if I don’t want to keep it. I might switch to the cheaper plan that includes ESPN after the Olympics if I like it in general.
Guess what? D2 and her fiancé have Sling, and have a package with 3 devices allowed at a time. And the most they ever use is 2. Payback for the years they have used my Netflix account.
We also live out in the boonies and have DSL with Frontier. What kind of internet speed do you get? DH is so frustrated we can only get 3 Mpbs. Can’t use Netflix streaming and have someone use a laptop without streaming issues.
@123txmom , have you looked into AT&T wireless home internet? They had a combined home phone 500GB plan for around $80, offered in rural areas. Alternately they should still have an unlimited hotspot plan available with unlimited plus cell service. Tmobile has an unlimited hotspot add-on for $25, which you can add to phone service or tablet.
O.K…we made the switch! Ditched the cable, only have Comcast internet and home phone. We now have Sling and inside antennas…along with our chromecast, netflix , amazon prime, HBO go–all of which we share with the kids in their respective locations. Saving $50/month. Gave Comcast every opportunity, but alas, they’re out. I will add…I would not have attempted if I had to figure all this out on my own. DS was home on break…and connected/signed on/set up Favorite channels, etc. in very short order. I would have taken a month to figure out. He also gave us tutorial on how to get to everything we want (i.e., which buttons to push–yes, I am a Luddite, too!). H is over the moon with the sports channels he now gets…
Ditch the home phone, too, if you both have cell phones. Save even more.
If you want to keep a home phone (for CC verification, etc.) you can use a VoIP provider, which will cost a few $ per month, a lot less than Comcast.
The first month after cutting the cord was hard for my DW. On the flip side, she is now into Anime shows.
Netflix, Amazon and Hulu are now showing the shows she liked to watch on cable. Her biggest problem now is to binge on a show and watch it for 18 hours straight.
I admit, the day I got my D’s Sling account, I might have watched 8 hours or so of sports in one day. Not since, though.
Most CC verification activity can be done via text or online. We kept our landline when we lived in the boonies where cell signal was close to zero bars - it was a cheap insurance. When we moved, the landline number could not be moved, so we ditched it.
Not here. Our DSL with landline costs $42 a month…because it’s considered a bundle. DSL only would be over $50.
@intparent what sports channels do you get with Sling? Were these channels you did not have before with cable/FIOS?
I really need to just sit down and figure this out. I mentioned above that I don’t watch enough TV to miss anything I can’t see with Netflix or Amazon Prime, but it’s the sports. Dh and the boys will want the ability to watch all the sports they already watch. Maybe this will be my weekend project-figure out what channels they want access to and then figure out how to access them from another source like Sling, etc. Every time I have looked into it in the past, I got overwhelmed and gave up. No giving up this time!
Ditto for me. Would love to know what Sling offers in the way of tennis and soccer.
@4kids4us, NBCSN was what I really wanted (the Olympics are coming!). I think D1 and fiancé have the combined Blue & Orange Sling package, which is $40/month. I know it included ESPN & ESPN2. Not sure what else. I didn’t have cable before, so can’t compare.
The nice thing about sling…you can subscribe to one channel for a month…and ditch it. We will be doing that for the Olympics.
What are you adding?
DH says we have 8 mb internet speed.
@intparent , thx for the clarification. I had looked at the packages Sling offered and they looked suitable to me in terms of the sports channels offered. I have a feeling there are some obscure sports channels dh and boys will want. I’m going to make a list of what we currently have, then a list of what they can’t live without and see if Sling and/or Netflix/Amazon Firestick have everything. We are fortunate (?) to live in an area where FIOS gives us both the DC and Baltimore markets. IOW, we can watch the major networks broadcast from both DC and Baltimore so in terms of NFL games, we can see for instance games broadcast on Baltimore’s CBS station that my parents, who live 20miles away, cannot see b/c they only get the DC CBS station. Then we have all these weird local sports channels for college sports, etc. While we certainly don’t NEED all that, it would be hard for the men in my family to suddenly no longer have all that access. If it’s a big cost savings to get rid of FIOS and use something like Sling, then dh won’t care as much as my teenagers will.
Question for those that gave up cable/FIOS and the DVR that probably came with your service (that you pay for of course),did you end up needing to buy a TIVO or some other DVR? I must admit we are spoiled with being able to pause, rewind, etc so I can’t imagine not having that. We have a TIVO and paid for lifetime access but at some point we stopped using it when we got a new tv and couldn’t figure out how to reconnect it. It’s probably obsolete now anyway and we’d have to get a new one. It is the very original one that we got when DVRs first came out.
My kid said something about maybe upgrading their Sling to include DVR during the Olympics. So apparently it has some capability.
@scubasue …I am right now looking at the Internet Plus you mentioned. I have the new 2018 packages and costs in front of me. They are charging $80 for the same service to us. What I was wondering is how many additional tv’s you have and how much is all the taxes and fees in addition to the $60? Our taxes and fees run about 1/3 of our bill. We also have voice unlimited included in our bundle, so it’s hard to tell what we are really paying. Ala Carte it rubs about $40 a month. DH wants to get rid of it, but I don’t…so I’m going to look into the other options like the Ooma you mentioned.
I guess I don’t want to have to carry my cellphone around with me all over the house, or take it out of my purse to hear if someone is calling. I like having a phone upstairs and I find it easier to talk on…but we are trying to cut down unnecessary expenses.
