Just like you go through your closet each season to thin out or update, do the same with your main living areas. Put it on the calendar at least twice a year!
Our furniture is mostly inherited, antique, and eclectic. I’ve mentioned before that my living room sofa probably is pushing 100 yrs old. It has been reupholstered, as have the two inherited club chairs.
There are some things that I would really like to replace in that room, notably the coffee table and two lamp tables, all passed on from my parents. There’s too much brown wood going on. I’d like new furniture in the DR and the things in the study/den need recovering, the sofa desperately. But we really were not in a financial position to spend money on such frivolous things for a long time, and right now the money is going to bathroom renovation. Frustrating.
I get disappointed when a color palette goes out of style and I realize how dated it looks. That’s the point though, right? To get you to re-paint, buy new pillows, buy new curtains, yada yada.
I am into MCM style. Decided that our “new” home will have a decor theme going: Pacific Northwest! I have paintings, photos, and art depicting our local sceneries and our biggest MCM object - the Space Needle. I figured those objects and scenery are not going away any time soon, so my theme is fine for a while.
OP - I like that basket. As others said, it can be accessorized nicely with seasonal stuff. Just keep it simple. (In our house, I would fill it with fresh fruit which then be quickly eaten by Mr.
).
