Help! My D is interning in Boston, where can I find housing?

OK that was my confusion thanks for the clarification. When I was looking thats exactly what I was seeing- a residential looking area, and was confused. I was thinking Malden was part of one of the universities.

Malden is near hipster Somerville, and some in real estate predict it will one day be a trendy spot. The people I know who live there like the proximity to the Assembly Square area for shopping, eating, etc. and the Orange Line is convenient.

Yes Boston is very expensive (I live in the area). I like the suggestions others have made about looking into dorms. Suffolk and Emerson would be the closest to the Financial District, so I recommend checking with those colleges first. Also I would imagine there would be a number of summer sublet apartments available from the many students renting off-campus and going home for the summer. Good luck, and let us know how you fare.

Savin Hill in Dorchester section of Boston is right on Red line and safe. It is near UMass Boston. You might find a sublet there for the summer on craigs list.

IS there anyway to avoid scams on craigslist. Thats my problem I always pic the apartment thats a scam. So I’m very skeptical to use craigslist

I would pursue a sublet in Brookline or the MIT frat or BU dorm. You could also try posting on Nextdoor Brookline. These would be safe and fun options.

It is a very expensive area. My son is currently moving out of a (really crappy) studio in Davis Sq/Somerville where he was paying $2100/month. No A/C, no washer and dryer in the unit, broken elevator, no dishwasher etc. He is finally upgrading to a one bedroom in hot Kendall Square. Lots of amenities there, but he’ll be paying $3800 a month. My daughter shared a nice reasonable Brookline apartment (don’t remember the cost) with a couple of wonderful roommates. She found it and them on Craigslist. Sometimes that works.

If you are worried about getting scammed then check out the university housing for summer in Post #12. Tufts is listed there—it is very close to Davis Sq (where your D can get a train to the city).

I thought that Tufts was a bit outside of Boston. Is that correct? What do you estimate her commute to the Financial district would be?

There are tons of apartments on and near Commonwealth Ave near Boston University…and many…many students who want to sublet in the summer.

BU student village is a nice option as well…but I imagine it’s not cheap.

All on the green line…and all within commuting distance.

Tufts is a little further out.

MIT Greek houses are also a good choice.

I agree with Post #29. Additionally, I’d look in Brookline. It is a safe area for a young woman. Does the place that she is interning at have other interns? If so, perhaps she can connect with them. She may also want to post on her FB page what she is looking for.
