Help Us Pick a School

With a 3.7 UW / 1460 SAT (superscore), frankly, Cornell, Boston University, U Penn, Rice, and Northwestern are very, very high reaches. Maybe he can pick one just for the heck of it, but the stats would be on the very low side unless he’s lopsided. If his math is 800 and his ERBW is 660, that would tell a different story. Also, legacy will not help at Cornell unless hi applies ED. By the way, Cornell does not have a biochem major.

Tulane, Boston College, and BU are stronger possibilities.

@nucities , she applied for business. Her friend, who had a slightly higher GPA, applied for Biology and was I believe waitlisted, but she didn’t add in 8th grade honors math, and it lowered her MCA score. Here is a calculator based on last year’s MCA criteria:

I don’t know what the typical MCA score is for Biochem but I believe hers was in the 4600 range. Your son had a leadership role within his EC, and also work experience, which she didn’t have. If you live in the Cal Poly Service area, that adds about 400 points.

Besides ASU Honors, she was accepted to the Weber Honors College at SDSU. Has he considered this? I like that school too.

@sbdad12 we live in San Diego and he really wants to get out of town. That kicked SDSU, USD and UCSD off the list. He did his MCA calc based on last years criteria and got something like 4400-4500. Without the SAT being factored in my hunch is his chances get a bit longer. I think he decided to stick with the ten he’s applied to and not add another. It’s one of the UCs/Cal Poly and if not he’s most likely heading to Tucson

If that’s the case, then I really like UCSB and Cal Poly SLO. I told my daughter that I’m a huge college football fan (Michigan grad) and the only school that doesn’t have a football team that I wouldn’t pass up is UCSB. It is such a nice school, and at the time was her first choice. Beautiful location and a great vibe.

But I also like the vibe in SLO. It is such a great town in a beautiful location. We have an embarrassment of riches in CA!

I like Tucson as well too (although I’m not supposed to say this being a Sun Devil parent).
