Help us plan where to move in retirement

@Knowsstuff - yep. Wouldn’t be planning any travel to Asia anytime soon.

We will be at a large airport in a few days. Will be interesting to see how many are wearing masks. I have bought some travel sized bacteria wipes and hand sanitizer

@jym626. You can get some masks at CVS or even home depot if you want one for yourself. It’s even becoming fashionable and was just at the dmv and a young 25 year old was wearing one . https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2020/jan/13/fashionable-face-masks-trying-to-make-something-horrific-seem-appealing

@Knowsstuff - I have 2 N-95 masks. I ordered them a week or 2 ago when there were none to be found at the local Home Depot or Lowes.

Husband was in Australia for the last week at a major conference (thousands. of people). Flew back as far as CA last night for a few days of meetings before heading home. He has come down with a heavy cold and is now worrying that he has Corvid-19.

But: 1) no fever and 2) he has a history of man-flu (search ‘manflu: the truth’ on YouTube). So, really not sure how much sympathy / worry is called for. Suggested he visit the nearest Minute Clinic type option to see whether it’s a horse or a zebra*.

*“When you hear hoofbeats, think horses not zebras”

Would NOT go to the minute clinic or the like. Go to a doctor or many hospitals have medical offices for this purpose like open till 10:00pm or so. So you don’t have to go to the ER. This is not about Zebras. This is about doing the swabs correctly and sending it to the appropriate labs and getting the results quicker. You are adding days to get results at the minute clinic or the like… FYI.

Husband agreed with you @Knowsstuff! he took himself down to the local hospital. Having just come from Aus, at an event with a lot of attendees from Asia, put convid-19 in the conversation & goth him put in the ‘expedited’ section. That meant he only waited 4 hours.

Turns out that this LA hospital didn’t have test kits for convid-19! In the end they didn’t even give him tamiflu- children’s robitussin & naprosyn and the reassurance that it was “very unlikely” that he has either convid or flu, and he can go ahead and fly home tomorrow.

I find college towns have the most and best amenities (medical, activities, facilities, restaurants, sports, entertainment) per price point, are more diverse than their small population would suggest, and with little to no traffic to contend with.

I don’t mean a big town/small city that happens to have a college. I mean a real college town, where the college is the unequivocal focal point.

For instance, Boulder CO was a college town 2 decades ago, but definitely not today.

Hanover NH, Blacksburg VA and Bloomington IN are quintessential college towns that could be a basis for comparison.

If you decide to investigate, I certainly wouldn’t advise living right across from campus, of course. However, the towns usually exude that youthful can-do attitude and the adult population is usually more educated than the national average as well.

Do NOT come to NJ. Horrible for retirees. Property Taxes are insane, auto insurance and health insurance just as bad. Check out North Carolina.

Honestly, having grown up in Philly… Retiring to New Jersey never even crossed my mind.

We actually thought about NJ for retirement. Someplace in southern NJ…maybe south of Ocean City. There are a few really cute towns. But frankly, they seem sort of dead. We have visited and they just don’t have any spark to them. So…off the radar screen.

Boulder is full of traffic, though still lovely in many ways … but even 2+ decades ago (when we relocated in 1993) it was too pricey for us to consider.

Spanish and Italian are related enough that some colleges offer accelerated Italian courses for those who already know Spanish.

I was just flying through Los Angeles (LAX) I saw exactly three people with masks on. Maybe it’s different in the international terminal.

We are flying to Mexico City on Wednesday - not planning to wear masks…

Wonder if Sequim, Washington would fit your parameters. It sounds like it would. No state income tax and nice weather too.

Not many. I just came back from a trip. I saw just one couple wearing a mask.
@jym626 I also bought hand wipe and Clorox wipes to wipe down my plane seat. I am flying again in a few days.

I bought masks, but will put them in the carry on. Am hoping not to need them.

The airline messed up our seats (as in accidentally cancelled them) so they put us in the bulkhead., so the tray table and tv monitor will be tucked in the armrest. An=m armed with my wipes!

@busdriver11 - Sequim is nice, but I don’t think it’s within 75 minutes of a “decent” airport. Of course I might be wrong.

I googled sequim. Only 130 days of sun a year, on average. Is that as low as it feels to me?

The USA average, according to a google search, is 205 sunny days.
