Carleton in Mn is an awesome SLAC that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
This is a great and thorough list, so I’ll just add some more comments here based on what I know of these places:
New Paltz - The one state school here, will be affordable even for out-of-state, something to think about if she is headed all of the way to a PhD. Small but nice downtown, closest school to Woodstock shares that vibe.
Muhlenberg - Big theater school, and also a big pre-med school, so you combine the artsy and serious student elements.
Clark has a very well-regarded psychology program.
Ithaca and Saratoga Springs are great small college towns. So cute and friendly they draw summer tourists.
Goucher is in Towson, MD. There is a mall next door in the downtown, but then a typical downtown too. Towson State is on the other side of the town center.
Good!! Now let them do a cash infusion for Goucher too!
There are still many changes at Clark. Great historical Psych program for sure, but best to be aware of the changes upcoming. Clark to refocus around key academic areas, enhanced interdisciplinary opportunities | ClarkU News
It’s outside your requested geographic range, so I won’t dwell on it, but in case your radius opens up a bit, your daughter sounds like she would like William & Mary a lot. If not, there are a ton of great schools listed above!
Lots of great suggestions and these are just repeats, but the four that immediately came to my mind are Bard, Bryn Mawr, Muhlenberg, and Vassar.
I also agree William & Mary and Carleton would be well worth checking out if you are willing to go a little farther.
Thanks so much! She is a Jr now taking Honors Pre Calculus (will prob try the AP exam with some tutoring to make sure she is up to speed, but Math is a strong subject for her), AP English Lit ( will take AP exam in May), Honors Spanish 5 (she received her “seal of biliteracy” last year - not sure if this is a local/state thing or nationally known) and she has taken Honors Chem & Bio and will take Honors (or AP) Physics next year. Thx for your input.
Thanks so much! I wasn’t sure if we should add it to the list as I know it’s so competitive, but worth a visit as it’s not too far and a great music scene would be amazing for her. Thx!
Thx! I will check into those. Someone had mentioned Muhlenberg to us but I didn’t pursue it yet. Is Lehigh a big party school from what you may know (she doesn’t want that type of environment, so I’m trying to see what I can learn). Thx again!
Thank you for the input! She literally toured Wes and asked if she needed to look at other schools bc in her mind, she found “the one”. Obviously we’ll still look around at other places, but at this point she is thinking she would like to ED there. Fingers crossed! Thx again!
Thx so much! I appreciate your input and suggestions! Will be checking them out. Others have mentioned Wheaton so I’ll definitely look into it further. Thx!
Yes, it is.
Love all the input, thank you so much! I really think she will like Smith and Northampton so I’m excited to visit with her. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for the personal insight! I actually went to Brandeis myself (eons ago) and my daughter does want to look there but I was worried if I mentioned it above it would be confusing with also saying she does not want a religious school (I just happened to know first hand that Brandeis, while kind of affiliated, wasn’t really religious in the sense of what she wanted to avoid). Thanks for the reassurance that it still is what I remember and it may be a good choice for her.
These are not safeties, but check out Bates and Smith and wonderfully inclusive campuses. Oops see Smith on the list already. I know Bates is further away but it is well worth a visit. I went to Wesleyan and loved it, but I bet you can guess where my kids attend currently.
Thank you so much for the suggestions! I really appreciate them! I will look into the book, I have heard about it and will investigate some of the other schools for sure. I wasn’t sure about UVM as she is more of an “indoor cat” type of girl and not outdoorsy at all ha. I didn’t know if that would alienate her in what seemed to me to be a school that would attract students who love nature and outdoor activities. But I could be way off base in my thoughts there. Any insight on that aspect at UVM?
Thanks so much! Others have mentioned it to me so I will definitely look into it with her. Much appreciated!
Always happy to answer questions. S24 has had more music opportunities at Williams than he can do and absolutely loves it there.
Sounds like an amazing place. Unfortunately it is about 5 hours from us and her anxiety has drawn a smaller radius for us so she at least feels like it’s a quick trip home should she need a little break (hopefully she assimilates quickly and doesn’t need many breaks at home, but to ease her mind we’re okay with sticking to her geographic requirements). Good to know for our son who is applying a year later and may wish to have more distance from us. ![]()
Thank you! Vassar is definitely on our list and Skidmore is being tossed around too. Much appreciated!
