Help! What do you wear under a clingy dress these days?

Spanx and a slip. Spanx helps with control and a slip lessens undesirable clinging in the wrong places. and a good bra! The girls need to be in the right place in that dress otherwise the look will be ruined.

Very cute dress.

Spanx killed me once. I haven’t given it another chance.

I don’t understand spanx. Why would I not want my hose to go all the way to my feet? I can’t stand wearing shoes without hose. Makes my shoes hurt.

IMO, Spanx are some sort of medieval torture device. The lengths we will go to avoid lumps, bumps, and bulges. Never had to worry about this until I went through menopause about 5 years ago.

If your SPANX are hurting you this much then you need to go up a size. They shouldn’t be torturous. Better to go up a size and still have some smoothness.

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander…

2nd the advice of trying them all one with the dress you plan to wear. Be forewarned…almost thought I had to call 911 from the Kohls dressing room. (Although I wouldn’t have been able to reach my phone!) Right size or not it can be deadly to get on and off. I had a one piece that was more like a longer tank top but it “rode up” and that was even worse than any middle bulge. Hard to fix without going to the restroom every 1/2 hour :frowning: to adjust. It was fine just standing still. Good to know about the snap crotch…was afraid to ask how one used the restroom. Do be careful about adding the slip…just one more line to deal with. ANd with bottoms only …that sausage that gets pulled in and pushed up…it has to go somewhere. At the last family wedding I was told by young nieces that the only ones who wear hose are the 85 year old grandmothers. Have fun!

Personally, I cannot tolerate wearing stockings or pantyhose unless I am the bride or otherwise in the wedding PARTY. I have very seldom worn for any other occasion.

I have never worn any molding body garment and found it challenging enough wearing a strapless bra to be in my sister’s wedding party as well as to be in one of my friend’s wedding party.

I give all you folks credit being willing and able to wear these garments that squash you. It does not look at all comfortable and may cause me to re-think if ever I am at all interested in buying anything “clingy.”

So far, just wearing a bra and slip has worked for anything I’ve worn. Prefer to exercise than to wear garments that make me feel “squished,” breathing freely is very important to me. If the garment looks too lumpy with just a great bra and slip, I don’t purchase it. There are some slips with “control tops,” but I’ve never tried any of them and have no current inclination to do so.

I do exercise, and I don’t wear undergarments to feel squished (I also believe in going for something in a larger size than normal to ease the tightness) but if the dress is clingy the undergarment really can SMOOTH things out - so it’s not always a matter of trying to look 10 pounds thinner but to look 10 times smoother. :). Even bra straps can be noticed in a clingy dress.

Sorry, I didn’t mean any person in particular about “being squished,” or even exercizing, just that I PERSONALLY hate the sensation so much. Haven’t even tried any of these “miracle” garments, so have no personal experience and perhaps will try something one day to see what the experience is like. Haven’t had the experience of “smoother” or not so far.

Do Spanx breathe? I’ve got a wedding to go to this summer in Florida. I don’t know what I’ll be wearing yet, but I wouldn’t want to add additional layers that will only make me hotter.

“The answer is spanx or spanx like product.” - That seems to be the most typical solution.

Personally I pick dresses that work with the imperfect body that I have - it’s just more practical and comfortable. Last year I got one styled a lot like this one (but prettier blue print, and not as clingy) - [Dana Buchman Geometric Surplice Faux-Wrap Dress](<a href=“Dana Buchman Geometric Surplice Faux-Wrap Dress”>Dana Buchman Geometric Surplice Faux-Wrap Dress)

I like the Spanx high waist half slip - I wear it all the time.

For a dressy event, I would wear nude pantyhose.

Panyhose are a great solution for unwanted lines and feel a lot better with shoes than the alternatives, IMO. And who wants to wear makeup (tanning spray) on their legs?

I have noticed that a lot of people, especially young ones, go bare-legged in situations where I would have worn hose. But I didn’t realize that the were so dated and out of style. When did this happen? What are the current fashion rules?

Depends on the legs!!!

Cute dress coloradomom, but even with the right draping too many clothes are too clingy for me because of fabric weight. Do you find it hangs well?
Those “comfortable layering tissue weight T’s” are another way of saying " we use 1/3 of the cotton we used to use, but our marketing department is trying to make you think that’s an improvement "

Edited. Just saw that the dress you liked wasn’t as clingy. That’s my major problem with just about everything I have tried on this year…too little substance to the fabric, too clingy. Even things cut well don’t hang well because of flimsy fabrics.

Motherbear, I am with you on this one! I don’t have daughters so no in-house fashion consultants. I missed the memo that pantyhose are for 85 year olds. Are we supposed to go bare-legged when we wear heels? I really am confused. I can’t imagine wearing closed shoes without stockings. Sandals when the weather is good? That I understand.

I’m going to a wedding this Friday. I bought a spanx-like shaper that is bra and panty combined.I’m long-waisted but the straps were very adjustable. It has hooks in the crotch so you can use the bathroom without undressing totally. Looks good under my dress!

I also still wear pantyhose. I have long, skinny feet with lots of bulging veins that I like to cover. Can’t imagine wearing a closed toe shoe without.

I can’t imagine wearing pantyhose unless they were a sheer black perhaps. No suntan, beige, nude - nada!!! I put baby powder in my shoes and my feet are fully comfy.

I still wear pantyhose too. My legs are always pale so I feel more comfortable wearing sheer, nude hose (or sheer black depending on what I’m wearing). I also don’t feel comfortable in closed-toe shoes in bare feet.
