help with New York City layover

To the 6 hour layover tomorrow, a nice spot might be the NY aquarium/Coney Island, both of them right at the same spot on the boardwalk. Could spend a nice day there, and pretty easy to get to from JFK, and back in time w/o much hassle.

If one did decide to do the Manhattan thing, check to make sure there is not some random bike/walk/marathon type deal. Those are big things in the late summer/fall, and talk about a traffic nightmare, roads can be randomly shut even major routes. So do make sure it is a non event type day. Sometimes a Manhattan to JFK trip could turn into a Seinfeld episode.

CBK, Thanks for the NY Aquarium/Coney Island suggestion - that is exactly what we did today, and it was great!

I really appreciate all the great suggestions! Thanks everyone. I knew if I asked on these boards I’d get good feeback.

Take the train from the plane-the A train and get off at Brooklyn Heights and walk around there-truth be told, you won’t have time to do much else. I am in NYC and I know, but the Heights can be a fun time. You can shop, go to the Transit Museum and eat at good restaurants and get the greatest view of lower Manhattan.
Enjoy.

I would suggest you have 2 plans. Plan A-more outdoor stuff for good weather, Plan B-more museum-like stuff for inclement weather. Have a great trip.

^^^smart! Common sense is so uncommon.

Alumother - you haven’t been to the MOMA in a while. The Guernica was returned to Spain in 1981 (after the return of the republic) and is now in the Reina Sofia. I loved looking at it at the MOMA when I was a kid and I finally saw it again last year in Madrid.

Skip the Empire State building, way too crowded. It took us over an hour (snaking along on line with all the tourists…) to the top and back. Concentrate on one or two neighborhoods. That way you won’t be using up too much time traveling. You could have the taxi drop you off at the South Street Seaport, then walk toward the financial district. New York is a great city for walking. This link can acquaint you with downtown NYC.

Allow twice as much time as you think you’ll need for traveling back and forth to the airport. Taxi would be the best way.

You are right. It’s been a very long time. 1979 I believe. I’m glad it went back to Spain.

My own recommendation would be to take one of the Circle Line tours—
see www.circleline.com or www.circleline42.com.

Doing so will give you a chance to see the highlights. You can buy tickets in advance if you want to. There are a few different itineraries.
