LOA’s are not a requirement for admission to USNA. In fact, the majority of Midshipmen appointees DO NOT receive LOA’s, so no worry there.

A nomination is required to compete for appointment at USNA, and those can come from a variety of sources. Everyone is eligible to apply to their Member of Congress and both US Senators as well as the Vice President. VP noms might be one or two per year. I assume that your son applied for all of those, or at least the MOC and Senators.

If you’re concerned, your best bet is probably to start with the Blue and Gold Officer and see what he/she knows about your son’s candidacy.

You need to be triple qualified - scholastically, physically (Candidate Fitness Assessment) and medically (DODMERB physical) AND have the nomination to compete for appointment. If your son is missing one of those pieces, he will not be considered for appointment in this cycle. Check with the BGO to get status on those four pieces. If the BGO doesn’t know, call Admissions.

You should also be able to check DODMERB to get medical status.

PM me if you have any additional questions. I’m a grad, BGO and have two sons at USNA in 2010 and 2011.

Good luck to your son!
