High School Class of 2014

Summer camps for sports and I’m volunteering (not for hours though)

Studying for the SAT is not a ec as far as in concerned o.o I’m also working at an ice cream shop

@taneeshie: lucky! I’d love to have a summer job. There just are so few opportunities here if you aren’t eighteen, unless you know somebody. I’ll have a job once my dad’s friend needs a new employee at his pizza place, but I also don’t turn sixteen until september.

How old are you guys?

I’m only 14, turning 15 in August.
Coldstone Creamery has already guaranteed me a job once I turn sixteen because my friend who graduated worked there (:

15 and yup super true I only work there cause I know the owner and technically 15 year olds can’t work but I get paid anyways lool

I just turned 15 on July 2nd, wasnt a great birthday though -__-. And since June 28th, I’ve been in Africa visiting family( my dad works for ibm got transferred over there), and In about the 2nd week of August I’ll be coming back home and working on a family friends farm for some money.
But instead of enjoying my vacation, I have to do some summer work for AP Bio and AP Euro…suckss!

Anyone here have any summer work for your AP’s in the fall?

God, you guys. Get a sense of humor. No one was being serious about the including studying for the SAT as an EC. No one here is that stupid.

I am going to start studying for my psat on AUG 1 does anybody recommend any good prep books?

SAT Studying as an EC? That sounds super boring! No summer work for APs because I’m not taking an AP. Plus, I’m 14 (turning 15 on October 5! 15 on 10/5 hehe :))

As for PSAT studying, just pick up the SAT College Board study guide book. I think it’s the best that I’ve seen, even though it’s not that helpful as in tips and stuff. If you are looking at other choices, the Princeton Review and Peterson’s are good ones.

I dont turn 16 till december.

@ anaychi : agreed.

I’m fifteen yep.

Seaworld? Sounds exciting. So does working at coldstone creamery! Never actually tried their ice-cream… Is it as good as they say? (aka best tasting ice-cream there is). Lol seems like you lot have… Connections. Or maybe a life. I’m not close/good friends with many people older than me. For the upperclassman I do know, they’re too busy with internships and online mmorpg’s in their spare time. :P

Wow evanb, I’m 364 days older than you. You’re really class of '14?

Coldstone is like heaven. I mean, in my opinion, anyway…
I’m only friends with a ton of upperclassmen because I was in a music ensemble with a ton of them. It’s a selective group and we rehearsed 15 hours a week, so we got to know each other.

@StudiousMaximus: In NC, the birthday cut off date for PreK registration was October 9 the year that I signed up, so I’m actually very young. I was the youngest one in my class from elementary up to now, but I’ve always had the highest grades. But, I was more mature at 4 than most four year olds.

@ sardony: ah… Piano is a very lonely instrument. I’ve always wanted to be a part of an orchestra or ensemble since I just love music. Another one of my impossible dreams is to conduct an orchestra. Anyways, I managed to take group lessons for violin at age 13 (already verryy late compared to most) but dropped it because I procrastinated/ didn’t practice; when I did practice, I was busy with piano since I play it competitively and started just before I turned 5. I just wasn’t prepared to dedicate myself to it. Nonetheless, I still love piano. I’m really betting on my motivation to practice and improve a lot this year so it could be a hook. Last year I didn’t do that many extracurrics (started 3, only stuck to debate because others were disorganized/clashed with my piano schedule). I’m hoping to join at least three more; tennis, xc, and a math/robotics/science related club. (depending on what i find most interesting). I worry that having 3 years instead of 4 will detract from whatever chances I have. What extracurrics are you guys doing in the school year? (forgive me if this I’d a repeat of something I didn’t see)

@upinflight: I play piano (: Our school has a percussion ensemble; I was one of the electronic keyboards. I’ve played piano for 7 years now, and the violin for 3-4. If your school puts on musicals and stuff, you could audition for a part in the ‘pit’ orchestra with piano. That’s if they let students play the music for the performance. I’m going to be on the math team again, music honors society, swim team, and after-school orchestra. I’m also going to be volunteering once a week.

@upinflight: My ECs are Student Government, HOSA, Marching Band, Concert Band, Pep Band, Baseball, Volunteering at local non-profits (I hop around), and part-time employment (I need some $$ :)). My hobbies are reading (just ordered a Kindle and it will arrive in a few weeks), playing the trumpet, and learning new things.

@sardony: oh wow, haha. I admit one of the things that was really restricting me was my preference of playing classical music.

There is this other girl in my class who also plays piano, and although she plays classical music as well, she’s more geared toward jazz/contemporary. But because she’s been experienced in playing in bands/orchestras before (since she plays other instruments as well), she’s already well-acquainted with the people in band (and she’s pretty good too), so whenever they need percussion, they go to her.

I guess i’m not very… social? Like, of course i have many friends, but i find it hard to get beyond the acquaintance-friend stage for most people because of our different interests… and behaviors (lol i guess i made up a new term there, but basically someone you’ll casually talk to if nothing else is happening and you’re like right next to each other, but in any other situation, not very often). I had a very close set of friends in middle school, but they went to different high schools, so yep.

Back on topic, i think i’ll go look into pit orchestra, and see what i can do. Yeah, i’m thinking of math team too, but as aforementioned, my school’s strongpoint is math, so even though i’m good… the captains/A teams are like… godly. o_o I guess the first week when clubs open i’ll sign up for a load of clubs to try them out, and eliminate the ones that aren’t so great. Swim team, nice! I used to swim competitively, but i’m not really built for swimming… How long have you been swimming? Volunteering sounds good. I’ll probably doing some tutoring for volunteering every week too (and if hospital positions open up, maybe that instead).

Egad. I type too much. -_-

@evan: Nice, student government. What position are you? I’ve contemplated running for VP/P, but i’ve gotten a bad impression of the sga. Like, in previous years, it was either 1) a popularity contest or 2) you had a catchy slogan (last year = “CUZ WE FRESH”). No one gives a spectacular speech, and i have NEVER seen dramatic improvements or anything for that matter. It seems that it’s just a title, and no one actually does anything? :s For your school is it like that?

I see a lot of you guys are into music. :stuck_out_tongue: Learning new things is a good one that most of us overlook. I’ve realized that all this school pressure instills the mindset that we simply need stellar grades/straight A’s and no one even CARES about the actual learning. It made me pretty depressed… it’s probably also another reason why the quality of my magnet school is dropping each year. =/

i wish my parents signed me up for a instrument, kinda late now. but i think i might learn how to play clarinet just because i want to. and i only know some of the upperclassmen at school because of soccer, but its not like im good friends with them just kind of casual acquaintances, my best friends are all in my class, we’re a really giggly group of 5 lol. coldstone is pretty good, but marble slab creamery wins (but that might be because im biased). and yes! student council is kind of like a joke, people run just for the title and i feel like every year they do less and less to help our class
