High School Class of 2014

Oh wait I’m also going to help organize a triathlon and try to start a crew team for the spring :)

@studious, like I said, I had to drive PAST Harvard, but I got to see the neighborhood around it. I actually saw Emory, unc-chapel hill, duke, and GA tech too. MIT was amazing!!! It’s a really cool campus, everyone seemed so friendly. It really does seem half Asian, half white, which is cool. The infinite corridor really is as big as it looks and in the summer, its gorgeous. Everyone was outside playing frisbee and football. It’s in a nice area of Boston too. The campus is huge and welcoming, but the pretty small size is perfect. If you like the comradery of nerd groups, its a perfect school. Basically, if you get in and can afford it, GO!!!

On a side note, Duke is very beautiful and Gothic. The students are very nice, but struck me as a tad distant. And the rivalry between unc and duke is not exaggerated. There’s no serious hatred, it just adds to the school spirit.

In Emory, the professors are beyond anything I’ve seen. They’re so nice!!! They go so far out of their way to help you, its really great.

Hey guys, I have a question for you all: what kinds of SSL positions/jobs have you done in the past, and was it a good experience? This summer I called/went job searching too late, so all the positions were filled. Originally I had wanted to volunteer at a hospital. Anyway, for now I’m probably volunteering as an administrative aid (basic secretary duties) and a habitat restoration worker (it’s going to be really hot/uncomfortable, but the manager guy seemed really enthusiastic and said he loves talking about the different insect, bird, and plant species - should be beneficial for envirothon, right?).

@upinflight Last year I worked on a vegetable farm. Quite an interesting experience, I was in the tomato packing house, and let me tell you it was intense! You wouln’t think it would be but it was, the fun part about it was I got to choose how many hours I worked a day, and with 8/per hour, I quickly made over 1000 bucks about 4-5 weeks. After I come back from summer vacation, I might start up again before school starts

How early did you guys start college research? What factors about schools on your list appealed to you?

I feel like such a loser replying alone right now haha, but to answer your question

@franzferdinand Around the beginning of freshmen year.It sort of hit me around Jan when I did terrible on my Chem midterm, that colleges that I want to go to don’t have students with as low as a grade as I got on the midterm. I wish it had hit me sooner, so in I would have focused more on my advanced high school courses in 8th grade.

And for me, I would have to say,
-Location, I just feel the need to get away from my enviornment experience a whole new branch of people
-Prestige, My dad went to grad school at 2 ivies and at NYU. He expects a lot out of me, and I know I could make him proud and I want to just by going to an equally great school as he did
-Academics, Definetley!! I don’t want to pay a large some of money for four years just to end up not liking my career, and going nowhere in life.
-Diversity, I don’t want to in an diverse enviornment where I can experience a broad spectra of cultures
-Happiness of Students, self explanatory. I want to go to a school that academics are cherished but at the same time students can have fun, and enjoy themselves

I started college research in 8th grade I was curious put that together with being up at 3 am and you’ve got a full blown college search  and on that note can you guys rate my schedule because I changed it:

I changed my schedule again so less history here it is and this is approved

-SAT 2 Biology

-Dance
-I will probably be taking the SAT 2 subject test for my other subjects like chem in june 2011

I always wanted to go to Yale. One night, absolutely bored to death, I decided to check out Yale’s website. I looked at their prospective freshman requirements, and it was like, “I gotta buckle up”. I don’t want to go to Yale anymore, but I guess my whole college search thing started in the middle of my freshman year.

Can you take Subject Tests anytime you want? I want to take World History soon, so I won’t forget it.

You can take them at different times of the year look:
[SAT - College Board - The Most Widely Used College Admission Exam](<a href=“The SAT – SAT Suite | College Board”>The SAT – SAT Suite | College Board)

These are all the courses that I’m planning on taking before I graduate. The Valedictorians in my school district usually take at least 12-16 AP classes total in their high school years. A couple students in the past at my school have 7 AP classes in either their Junior and/or Senior year. I’m planning to go not as extreme as some of them, but still pretty decent in class rank during my last 2 years of high school.

What I’d like to know is, if anyone else might be doing this, which classes do you recommend taking, and if I should also take an SAT II subject test along with the annual Collegeboard administered AP test for that class. I also will be taking Spanish II online before my Junior year and Physics Honors online before my Senior year. I consider myself more of a math and science guy than a humanity and liberal arts person. I’ll be most likely be majoring in Engineering or Premedicine in undergraduate college.

Oh, and don’t worry, I’m pretty sure I have some time management skills and room for a few clubs and extracurricular activities :p! I’m still thinking about my Junior and Senior year schedules.

I have mine planned out, too.

I might self-study any AP to make up for lack of AP’s in Sophomore year.

My school is a tiny private school, offering about 6 APs total, there have only been 2 cases before me in which a sophomore was allowed to take an AP class, please tell me what you think of my courses!

If your saying same to me…your school has slot more options than mine does.

It’s a drag that Illinois requires P.E to be taken every day, every year, so that eats out of my available class slots. I only have 5 slots for classes.

Sorry, I meant same to franzferdinand. I Should have mentioned that.

Haha it’s ok, and Anaychi I wouldn’t worry about it, since it’s the whole state, a college would probably recognize that and not hold it against you, because it’s not your fault. I’ve also been told, higher level colleges don’t compare someone from a small private school, to a person from a gigantic school. They do with gpa and SAT but class selection changes on the school, they look to see how well you performed and stood out at your school. Someone can correct me if I am wrong but thisis what in was told by people at several college’s admissions.
