@Tobster18 I wasn’t trying to be too harsh in my last post, just a little blunt, I guess. Your work ethic and ambition is definitely something to be admired. As my father says to me sometimes, “You’re never too young to set goals for yourself”.
No I understand, I’m tired of my teachers and guidance counselors telling me not to stress, and not push myself, and constantly reassuring me I’ll make it into Harvard. I need people that will be blunt with me and tell me the truth, thats why I joined this forum, so thanks everyone, your critique has given me a lot of insight!!
@Tobster18 I feel the same way. I don’t really know if I want to be given an easier chance, but I guess the only other thing I can do is put my race as Other, but I’m honestly decided whether I want to do that. I have time.
Yeah, it’s just so surreal to me that I am going to college in 2 years, when it feels like just yesterday I was freaking out about going to middle school!!
@Tobster18 I feel the same way. I still can’t wrap my head around it. Also, you’re welcome. Sometimes, being blunt actually works for people.
@Tobster18 Also, what APs did you take last year, just curious? There is a 2016 AP Results thread on CC where people are comparing their AP exam scores. If you haven’t already, you should check it out. Here’s the link: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/1901098-2015-2016-ap-score-results-thread.html#latest
I took Bio (4), World (5) (self-studied), Art History (4). Yeah my scores aren’t that great,I’m hoping to get all 5’s next year since the common app only allows you to self report 8 AP’s. So I will only have to report one 4, while the others will be 5’s (hopefully)
@Tobster18 Your scores are actually really good. I consider anything over a 3 to be a good score. 3s are okay, but you usually won’t get the credit.
are you guys going for angular (newspaper, debate, yearbook, specific focus) or well-rounded (ex. debate, basketball, orchestra…kinda does it all)?
I heard you’re supposed to be well rounded with a peak, for me my peak is research, and science related things
I am going for angular : internship at medical school, research at a hospital, Science Olympiad captain, Robotics programming captain, (going to give a shot at chemistry olympiad). yeah basically STEM focused but leaning towards science. Also planning to jumpstart a medical research club that has been dead at my school for a couple of years.
I’ve played baseball at a local league for the past 8 years of my life
@Ak2018 yes I am a she lol
Also random side note, its a 4 year college not a cc, not trying to sound pretentious, just fact checking so we have the most accurate advice possible
In terms of the ACT, I feel like its more straight foward with its reading and writing questions, and I really like the science section because it plays to my strengths a lot better than the graph analyzing the have you do on the SAT. Also, I was able to get a perfect math score 1st try, something I couldn’t do on the SAT at all, and I’m supposedly super good at math, so actually seeing that show up is nice. I also like the way they lay stuff out on the page to minimize flipping back and forth, and the timing works great for me.
@bubblylaugh both I guess? I have a few thungs such as debate and orchestra (qutting/quit both though) and rock climbing. I guess my focus is robotics/general stem. I do robotics club (have a leadership position), am a STEM summer camp counsoler, mentor younger teams in robotics, planned and am going to teach science activities at a summer camp in el salvador, want to do a computer programming and/or CAD competition, am certified in Solidworks, do math competitions, and am thinking about designing a battlebot and other stuff in CAD and possibly create a portfolio once I get my new laptop later this summer… So maybe not as well rounded as I thought lol. I have to take a good amount of non STEM related classes the next two years bc of graduation requirements so thats well rounded I guess.
@bubblylaugh I would say angular, for the most part. I have a humongously large obsession and interest into STEM and Robotics. Most of the clubs I plan to join are STEM-based, however, my main interest is ROBOTICS!
I also think, however, I’m pretty well-rounded, but I also have a peak like @Tobster18 said. My peak obviously is Robotics, however, I try to do a little bit of everything. Not only do have a major STEM interest, but I also have interests in subjects such as Philosophy, Psychology, and Literature. I always love watching Crash Course Philosophy and Psychology with Hank Green, and Crash Course Literature with John Green. That’s how I learned so much about Philosophy recently, through my English class and Hank’s videos. I also like to participate in sports, mainly track. So I guess you really could say both.
Anyone else feel like high school students taking AP classes owe a big debt of gratitude towards Hank and John Green, the Green brothers? Since they’ve created Crash Course, students have used their videos as a review for their classes and for tests. In the 2016 AP Results Thread, so many people commented on how they literally used Crash Course to review days before the exam. We should really thank them somehow! They helped me so much with Chemistry!
Also, has anyone watched that new show on ABC called BattleBots?
Anyone participate in First Robotics
@snowfairy137 the only thing i like about the ACT is the math section which I slightly prefer over SAT math but i strongly prefer SAT english only because you have to go so fast on the ACT, I can’t focus on the text for reading i need the time the SAT gives us even though the ACT questions are definitely easier
Does anyone have any recommendations for realistic ACT practice tests?
@ak2018 Hank’s bio videos saved me in honors bio last year.
Its not the first season, but yes, I’ve been watching battlebots. I read the rules and you only have to design a robot to complete for a spot in competition, so I’m thinking I might do that just for fun.
@HritikKumar I’ve been in FIRST programs since 5th grade!
@BucketsUCSC I’m a super fast reader, so I was ending up with way too much time left over on the SAT, but yea, that makes sense.
@DancingwithStars prepscholar has free links to like 5 or 6 free offical practice tests
