High School Class of 2018

@frazzledazzle I was surprised when it was in almost chronological order. I thought the format was changed since when the practice tests were released haha.

Time to be nervous about SAT results for one month :(( I sort of hate how all these standardized tests play a sizable role in US admissions. They’re expensive, slow, hard-to-do, and not enough test dates to feel safe IMO. MCAT has 1 - 3 test dates every month, why not the SAT? And why do they cost so much yet give no fee waivers for internationals even though they’re non-profit :frowning:

@acomfysofa I don’t see anything non-profit about charging 12 bucks for a score report. Non-Profit is a term thrown around way too loosely IMO.

@kassh4 Of course. The SAT with Essay here is a little less than $110. I know really smart people at my school who would have a shot at those full-ride financial aid US universities but would struggle with the SAT cost. In comparison, CommonApp waives their $70 - $100 application fees for internationals.

Math 2 was a mess for me too. I took too long and ended up leaving 9 blank. I ended up not finishing, and it was just so bad. Last time I took it, I finished, so I think it’ll be a worse score this time around. On the bright side, the Latin test was pretty easy and I think I did well enough on it.

@acomfysofa All my friends and I are to scared to surf but we do go to the beach a lot. My school even takes us twice a year. The first trip is for a fun day off. The second is for a beach cleanup.

I HATE the fee for sending test scores. They’re ridiculous. University of Chicago lets you self report your scores! You only have to formally submit them if you get accepted. I really wish more schools would also do that.

@acomfysofa

What are you aiming for and what did you get in the past?

Not from California but went surfing once. It’s really hard and tiring. Whenever I would stay up I would always fall when it hit the shore too. Was fun tho.

It’s going to cost me SO much to apply to college. The app fees alone for the 8 schools I’m applying to is ~$500 (and 2 of the schools are free!). Add on top of that the cost of sending in test scores and the cost will probably be close to $1000. That’s something my family can’t really afford, yet we make too much to qualify for fee waivers (above the cutoff in my state by ~$10k).

@snowfairy137 Surfing sounds fun! It’s not something we can do in Maine. The water is always too cold and the waves don’t get big enough.

@frazzledazzle Some liberal arts schools I have been looking at have said on their websites to contact them directly about fee waivers. Although you don’t qualify in your state, maybe if you email them and explain your financial situation they may give you one? The worst thing that can happen is that they say no.

I’m applying to about 10 and it will be $1500+ too. I found out the CSS Profile costs money to send so there is another expense. Hopefully it will all be worth it for.

It feels weird to call myself a Senior. I still feel like I’m 14.

@frazzledazzle

Do you honestly have to apply for 8 schools? Can’t you cut down on it a bit?

@frazzledazzle oh yeah not something I’d do in WA state either. I did it during a trip to Hawaii.

I feel like anywhere between 6-8 is a good amount of schools to apply to. It can allow 2 reaches, 2 matches, and 2 safeties and then give or take if you want more matches or safeties.

I recently found out that about half of the schools I was looking at applying to don’t accept the common app, which is cool but means that I have to write even more essays than I was expecting.

I have 1 safety (state school, free to apply to, guaranteed $6-8k at least merit), 3 matches, and 4 reaches.
I have been thinking about fee waivers, and I’m going to be emailing the admissions person for my region at each of the schools I’m applying to that cost money to see if I could get a fee waiver. My mom doesn’t want me to worry about the financials, but I’m going to do what I can to help.
I could apply to less than 8 schools, but I don’t want to. I want to try to open as many doors as I can, and I want to be accepted to a great school so I don’t have to go to my state school like my mom wants me to. I want to get out of my state and make a life for myself elsewhere.

My state flagship is AMAZING has multiple top 10 programs. The only problem is that its close enough to me where I feel like my parents would want me to commute every day and save the 10k for room and board, and I really don’t want to do that.

@frazzledazzle Same here! Parents want me to go to a university in this same province but I want to go elsewhere. Hence why I have to pay for all of these expensive SATs, study materials, and application fees myself out of pocket :frowning: I know relatives who went through that same situation of staying with their parents and they’re a little miserable because they’re 20-year-olds-and-older being treated as teenagers (from what they’ve told me) without freedom to do much like be in a relationship and such.

And I don’t like the universities here. They have new buildings along with a couple older ones, but the atmosphere and community feel empty. I’ve met some nice people there though so there’s that.

They’ll let me go if the total yearly cost is less than a university here (including tuition & room/board, fortunately not a problem for those higher-tier schools I’m applying to). My school marks and financials are good enough for it to be a realistic option to pursue albeit a crapshoot, but I feel that applying for me is more difficult than it should be.

@frazzledazzle

Wait, but if you are struggling to pay for college application fees, how are you going to afford those expensive OOS reach colleges?

@acomfysofa

Aren’t Canadian universities like super-cheap though? What are these higher-tier schools that you think will be cheaper?

@acomfysofa Are you sure the US schools you’re applying to meet need for internationals?

@snowfairy137

I agree, if @acomfysofa wants to go to a high tier school and get aid as an international student, he doesn’t just need to be good, he needs to be really really good. Often, aid for internationals is very limited and only the best and brightest out of the internationals get aid.

@acomfysofa Not trying to crush your dreams but have you checked the exchange rate between CAD and USD? Nice for Americans but yeouch going the other way.

Also I’m pretty sure the American student visa doesn’t translate into a work visa after college. You either have to reapply which is competitive or go home and work.
