Highly rated movies that disappoint you

Hated “American Beauty,” “Avatar,” and most of the Batman/Spider-man/Superman/etc. movies

Strongly disliked “American Hustle” (I just didn’t understand all the hoopla) and “It’s a Wonderful Life” (yes, I know I’m un-American and anti-Christmas) and “Titanic” (for some reason, I really disliked Leonardo DiCaprio in this. That ship couldn’t sink fast enough)

Liked but disappointed in Her. Prefer Lars and the Real Girl which was more real and offbeat at same time.

I loved Lars and the Real Girl. :)

Me, too. D1 didn’t like it at all, though.

I thought Gravity was way overrated. I kept thinking about how implausible it was and that she was way too emotionly unstable to have been selected as an astronaut. I didnt like Dallas Buyers Club either and don’t really like Matthew McConaughey. I thought Castaway was tedious and Captain Phillips was boring although I generally like Tom Hanks. Titanic was so bad. I did not like Dark Knight, X-Men or the Spider-Man movies-i used them to catch up on sleep. I did actually like the new Godzilla- it was just a good, old fashioned monster movie. Also liked Belle. Loved Django.

Oh, we liked “Out of Africa”. We saw it on the big screen - stunning.

I liked Out of Africa too, but I had been reading all Isak Dinsens works, even before it came out as a movie.
Plus- theres Redford again.
I had forgotten how much I enjoyed her short stories, time to dig them out again.

You mean, there’s young Redford.
I also saw Belle and was so-so. It’s beautiful but I didn’t find it very deep. I’m going out on a limb and admitting I’ve watched Jaws about a dozen times and it still holds me. As for Hanks, I put off seeing The Terminal for years- and then loved it.

I agree the Last Tango in Paris was terrible, Avatar was so so, but I like American Beauty and Out of Africa. Because we had not had a good movie experience lately, we rarely went out to see a movie. If we did, I can’t remember which one.

Barefoot in the Park, was a young Redford.
In Out of Africa, he was 50.
But that could be young I guess!
;)

Is that the one with Jane Fonda? They were both young.

I think they even made a TV series.
Not starring Fonda & Redford though.
They did! With Nipsey Russell, Scoey Mitchell & Tracy Reed.

Truffaut’s Two English Girls and Agnes Varda’s One Sings, the Other Doesn’t are my nominees.

I detest virtually all movies based on comic book characters.

^I can’t take animated films. Somehow the unreal leaps and strengths drive me nuts.

Monsters Inc. and The Iron Giant are awesome!

Legends of the Fall. Sorry thought it was terrible. Still can’t sit all the way through The Notebook.

We totally skipped Titanic and Gravity knowing they weren’t for us. No regrets. I wish we had done the same with the most recent King Kong too. That one really dragged, but I don’t recall it being highly acclaimed either, so it might not fit.

I liked Monsters, Inc and still consider it a top choice for animated.

We also all like Chicken Run (claymation) and Secondhand Lions (acting) if we’re adding films we like and recommend to others (pending what they are looking for). These two are family friendly comedy.

Gravity was a big let down for me, although the rest of my family enjoyed it.

My husband and I both hated Braveheart and have never watched Forrest Gump all the way through, even though I love Tom Hanks (I also didn’t like Castaway). I also wasn’t a big fan of Moonrise Kingdom (although my husband was), but we both really liked The Grand Budapest Hotel. Wes Anderson’s movies are an acquired taste, I think.

I loved both Moonrise Kingdom and Grand Budapest Hotel.

I detested Le Weekend, which got favorable notice lately. So did the friend I saw it with.

I’ve never watched Forrest Gump, Titanic, or Braveheart all the way through, either.
