Hilton Head Island

Wonderful. Sounds great. The politics here are still hot, but not much else. I’m up in Eau Claire WI right now and it’s 16 degrees. Looking on the bright side, we are off to Maui for nine days at the end of April. Something to look forward to.

I was just reading the “best book” thread and was tempted to post this there but thought that those of you who love Hilton Head might be more interested. When I was there last month, I stopped into Barnes and Noble one day to pick up a Sudoku book for my H. As I was headed to the cash, I noticed a table of “local author” books and stopped to have a look. I ended up buying a few that were written by Kathryn R. Wall, a writer who retired to HHI 17 years ago. She has written a series of mysteries and the main character, Bay Tanner, lives on HHI. The novels all take place in the area and surrounding Low Country so you’ll recognize many of the places mentioned. I finally got around to reading the first one and was very pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Looking forward to starting the next one!

P.S. The first one is called In For A Penny.

I went to Hilton Head many moons ago also. It was pretty undeveloped, had almost no one around. It was great for reading and sitting around by the pool.

Haven’t been back since, but would like to see what more than a few decades have wrought.

I am really hoping they can find a sponsor for the Heritage. As I recall, it used to follow the Masters and more of the big name golfers seemed to play in the tournament. Several years we stayed on the island during the tourney (at palmetto dunes) and would get passes for a couple of days. I remember watching Nick Faldo and Greg Norman in their prime. It was so much fun. I always wanted to go back and splurge on a condo on the course. Just mix a few drinks, watch some golf, get really ambitious and follow a golfer or two. Boy, I hope this wasn’t the last year.

Recently back from our first trip to HH. Stayed at Sea Pines in a condo we found on VRBO. Had bikes dropped at the place which we used to get around. Weather was gorgeous - low 80s and sunny. Had a great experience at LowCountry Backyard - great meal and great price. Rated #1 on TripAdvisor. Food at Salty Dog was terrible and it is overpriced. Had nice dinner at Skull Creek Boathouse although the wait was pretty long and food mediocre - but great location. We wanted to horseback ride and paddle board but were too casual about it and did not call ahead and they were booked. Loved HH and will definitely go back. Have vacationed at Kiawah a few times. Very similar just more to do tat HH.

I’d been envious of those just back except through the joys of timesharing and Marriott points (not DC points) we are off to Maui for nine days beginning on Wednesday. YES!!!

Been to all three; Hilton Head, Tybee Island, Martha’s Vineyard. Hilton Head is leaps and bounds ahead of the other two, at least from my perspective. HH doesn’t feel prententious like Martha’s Vineyard and the weather is definitely better. Tybee Island is fine for unglamorous fun; HH is more picturesque. Still waiting to see historic Dafuskie Island, across the inlet from HH.
