I worked part-time on campus from sophomore year. My kids did as well. I believe H worked from his freshman year! I enjoyed my jobs and believe it was about 10 hours/week, which was very manageable.
My daughter worked as a dancer/party motivator for a DJ company starting when she was 15 and ended up going to college in our area so she kept that job throughout college. The program she was in required 27 hours of classes per week plus time out of class for homework and prep time. Our take on things was that her primary “job” was school and her classes. As long as her grades were good we supported her working. The job with the DJ company was weekend work with staff meetings and practices/training and working parties on weekends. Between her classes and her job, she had to develop excellent time management and people skills which have served her well post graduation as she has grown her career. Keep in mind though that there is more to college than just classes and grades. There is a lot of learning and growth that comes from forming relationships with students from different walks of life and managing the responsibilities of independent living. So make sure that you have balance in your life that permits time for these things too. As long as you are not feeling overwhelmed, I’m all for working while a student. I know my daughter really enjoyed her job as a way to have a break from the grind of school and she certainly liked the freedom her income gave her.
I wouldn’t have been able to survive during undergrad without working!!! Good luck!
