Holiday Gifts for Wives

All I want is for my husband to notice the little hints I give and get them. I do not want him to spend a ton of money. My sons are so much better at this game than their father. I wish he’d learn from them. And yes, I could just give him a list or tell him what I want, but that’s not the point. I could just go buy it myself too.

During the year, I send my husband emails with “this is a possibility” in the subject line and a link to something I’d like. I send them as I see them. He’s under instructions to choose one or two and not spend too much. Sometimes he just uses what I send as a hint.

“All I want is for my husband to notice the little hints I give and get them.”

FYI - As a husband I can tell you that in general we are not good at little hints. If he is that bad at gift selection, give him a list.

Must be sex linked.
I can pick out books/music/movies that H just loves wheras even if he remembers my interests  he gets something that I either already have- that I bought and it didn’t work- or that I don’t have because I don’t want it.
I think some people must just be more attuned to nuance and others need the Titanic to broadside their dining room table.
Of course I did date a metro sexual guy once . However, it turned out more metro than sexual if you get my drift. ( I have no gaydar)
He was fun to go shopping with though, and a big help.He could critique without being critical.
Now if I ask my H what looks good- he either doesn’t know or everything does.
Big help.
I don’t mean just to be complaining- he did just fix my window in the Jeep and I am so happy.
I rolled it down two days ago and it wouldn’t roll up again.
We are leaving Sunday for a trip and it is 6 deg. F.
Windows are handy but all the dealers are booked till after new years.
He took the door panel off, braced the glass up so it will stay put & put the door panel back.
I can’t roll it down, but I can see out of it!
Thats what counts- that is a present in itself.

We solved it by picking out something together. As we had a big expenditure this year (house…) we weren’t going to get anything, but then happened to see this fantastic folk sculpture of a whale which we both thought would be perfect for said house. So, that’s our present to ourselves.

Ok, the snowblower was a gift for me too. (See Husband gift thread.)

I didn’t want to hear him complain all winter! :o

How about a nice cashmere wrap? Practical and stylish…

1sokkermom,

I am thinking of giving W a flat screen tv/dvd combo for the bedroom. I am sure I’ll…I mean, she’ll love it.

UMDAD

My ideal gift would be a weekend away for the two of us - a 1 or 2 night stay at a very, very nice hotel, a little low key sightseeing or shopping and a good dinner. the best present I could think of.

Don’t give up on the flat screen TV - I got one for the bedroom as a birthday present, and it was actually a great present.

I’m not big on gift either, buying nor giving. Being practical, I don’t like surprises especially big ticket items. Anything I like I’ll always buy it. Same with my H. We don’t have to wait for Christmas.
Gift for this year, life size family portraits. Now I don’t worry about missing my oldest daughter when she goes to college. There is one upstairs and one downstairs.
Another gift to ourselves is that we both took the week before the holidays off. While kids are in school we have the house to ourselves.
Priceless. Everything else there is MasterCard.:)

You should send that into MasterCard it would be a great commercial…visualize it, kids come home for xmas with laundry (insert product placement Tide) and picking up after them (AMerican Eagle clothing, XBox, etc.) , handing over your ATM card with MC logo for movies with friends, fast foward next week folks just sitting watching tv in silence…Priceless, for everything else there is MasterCard. :)

Hubby and I haven’t exchanged in years. Makes for much less stress at holiday time. Back in the dark ages when we did exchange, one year he gave me white cotton underwear and a mug. Money wasn’t a particular issue.

After many years my husband finally figured out to stay away from clothing and jewelry. What I do now is I give him ideas. Specific I find is best. I also tell my kids what I like and they tell him.
This year I asked for a set of two new frying pans from William Sonoma. They are on sale and something I would not buy for myself.
I also went to a local store that sells jewelry by artists with my D and showed her some pieces I would actually wear. She took him back and he had his pick of several items. That way I get something I will use but he also gets the pleasure of making a choice.
Does your wife take baths? I usually get some bath items from L’Ocitenne(sp). Their stuff is expensive so it is a treat.
The absolute best present is either time away from home that he has planned out all the details. Babysitter, hotel etc. It is a pleasure for once to not be the one making all the details. Could do this for a concert, play or even just out to dinner.
I also like certificates for manicures and massages.

Here is a GREAT idea for a woman of a certain age. I asked for one and H got it for me, but I suspect lots of women would probably like it. Not expensive either.

A light-up magnifying mirror that plugs in and stands on a countertop.

Somewhere about 45 vision starts to go and it is so nice to have a little magnification when searching for errant eyebrow hairs, checking makeup, etc.

Great suggestion, SBmom. My mom has one that she has been using for about 20 years, and last year my D got one from her aunt and uncle, and it is one of her most-used gifts ever. Of course D is only 15, but she loves her light-up make-up mirror (I don’t know if hers is magnifying or not though). It seems to be a gift that most women would appreciate.

Dear H
Don’t bother with gifts. I already bought mine as usual. Thanks.

The only thing I want is a new waffle maker–11yo ruined the old one by making scrambled eggs in it and scrubbing off the non-stick coating.

Early on cookbooks were mentioned… there is a new one by Alice Waters called “The Art of Simple Food: Notes, Lessons, and Recipes from a Delicious Revolution.” My chef sister-in-law says it’s very good, and I’m hoping it will be on somebody’s radar for me.

If your wife goes to the gym, how about some good sport headphones for her iPod? Or the iPod itself, if she doesn’t have one. Or a gym bag.

I like to hike, and I’ve been happy to get updated versions of local trail guides in past years. As others have said, it will probably work well to get things that go along with her interests.

Re: hints and requests:

I ASKED for a multi disc CD changer for 3 years and still, DH didn’t get it. I received various things that didn’t have much to do with who I am. I guess I have to ask for what I want on the day he goes shopping…

Finally I told our son about the disc changer. DH surprised me with it. Then he filled it with his favorite music (which he just assumes is my favorite music, too)

~mafool (happily married 25 years to a wonderfully kind, but clueless, man)

Mom60 - if you lived close by, I could take your H shopping for you and you could do the same for me. I love, love, love Williams and Sonoma. My best friend and I are getting each other a gift certificate and going shopping together after xmas.

So, on that note - any of their cookbooks are great. I especially love the soups ones.

How about a nice bottle of wine, some upscale crackers, and a jar of tapenade or cheese along with those restaurant reservations?

By far my favorite present ever was tickets to a Broadway show and dinner reservations. I couldn’t believe he put the whole package together. It was a splurge, but I appreciated it so much.

worknprogress - the tickets to a Broadway show and dinner reservations would be my favorite present as well - it’s just that my H would never think of doing that! Can you send your H to give mine some tips?
