Just watched the George C Scott version for a unique reason–we recently were in Shrewsbury England where it was filmed. The Town Crier gives walking tours, and he pointed out specific locations where scenes were filmed. He also was a stand in for the Ghost of Future Yet To Come, as he is 7’2" tall! Look up Martin Wood.
And deeply un-PC, not least because of the omnipresent workplace sexual harassment (even in 10 Downing St!)
We really enjoyed Spirited last year, and it’s now on the annual Christmas movies list for our family.
Deck the Halls is a favorite here (a comedy).
I watch The Holiday and lots of Hallmark movies every Christmas by myself. The Hallmark movies are all comfortingly similar & bland so I can’t recommend one more so than another.
As a family we love White Christmas and Elf. We pretty much know White Christmas by heart and we all talk like 1940’s jazzy cats for a few days after. “Hey Mister, send down a jug of that jingle juice, will ya?”
I also love Christmas With the Cranks which is very stupid but funny.
And I just watched Office Party over the weekend, about a Christmas work party that is out of control and I thought it was hysterical. It’s pretty vulgar, but I loved it.
We definitely watch Die Hard every year.
We also do a lot of Christmas Horror (which I am sure most of you don’t, but I’ll list some for those that do!)
Gremlins (PG/PG 13?)
Anna and the Apocalypse
Krampus
Violent Night
The Lodge
Better Watch Out
Silent Night, Deadly Night
Black Christmas (various versions)
There are more, but that is all I have right now!
we watched " Best. Christmas. Ever!" on Netflix and overall enjoyed it. Parts were a bit cheesy IMO (won’t mention which to avoid spoilers) but parts were hilarious and overall enjoyed the dialogue and acting.
Another vote for “Family Man” although I like to watch it at the end of the year post-Christmas. It is a romantic comedy but also to me seems to carry a deeper message, what if we had made different choices in life?
Elf
A Charlie Brown Christmas
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (original animated version)
I enjoy watching (but don’t feel the need to watch annually) The Santa Claus (with Tim Allen, first one), Miracle on 34th Street (1994 version).
A Christmas Story and Rudolph have grown on me, because H likes to watch them.
Not a fan of It’s a Wonderful Life. I like the sentiment, just not the movie, so much.
Any holiday movie that makes YOU feel good is a good holiday movie!!
I forgot about Christmas with the Kranks. I love that one! It’s particularly sentimental to me now as an empty nester; I would absolutely alter my plans to accommodate my kiddo.
Elf
If I am channel surfing and find it, I always watch.
S and oldest GD (age 6) were here over the weekend for baptism of D’s baby boy. We had terrible weather in TN late Saturday and GD was getting anxious as we watched television updates. As soon as they cleared us from tornado warnings, we got her away from tv and then later searched for better content than the wall to wall tornado coverage Saturday evening and Sunday morning. We came across Home Alone and watched part of it Saturday night and had enough time on Sunday morning to watch the whole thing before church service. GD had so many questions, but I think she loved it and it was fun to see things through her eyes. I don’t consider Home Alone or Home Alone 2 as my favorites, but I have seen them as much as any Christmas movies through the years because they are D’s favorites and she played them frequently from childhood on, even streaming HA2 while we prepped Thanksgiving last year (she’s 36).
I think I am the only person in history to NOT like Elf!!!
If we are going “way” back, our FAMILY favs when the kids were young were Jingle All The Way with Arnold S and the sentimental favorite, Sesame Street Christmas. D and her fiance actually found SS Christmas on YouTube and watched it together last year!
You’re not alone. My family does not like Elf either.
We not only watch the film version of White Christmas every year, we seek out local productions of the stage play. The quality varies greatly but it’s always a good time.
Not a film but…we enjoy watching SNL’s holiday special every year, it’s a compilation of skits from past seasons.
And as for New Year’s movies: When Harry Met Sally isn’t strictly a holiday movie but New Year’s Eve plays a prominent role, so we stay off the roads and watch it every December 31.
I have never seen this movie, but part of it was filmed in the neighborhood where I live now. I need to watch it.
We have watched “White Christmas” every year since forever and my entire family knows every line and song.
I am a huge fan of “Home Alone” and can watch it over and over.
Finally watched “A Chritmas Story” last year and though it was “meh”.
My family likes this. I was bored about 15 minutes in. I never think it’s Chritmas - y.
I’ve never been an ELF fan myself.
I will say “Spirited” starts off pretty corny - but it definitely gets better and better. There is one musical number that is absolutely hilarious! So stay with it !
Ours too! I was surprised when DH & both teens wanted to watch it again this year.
I love Elf because I work in children’s book publishing so that whole storyline cracks me up. Selling the books with the missing last page, bringing in the ringer to write a bestseller. It’s funny stuff to me.
I forgot to mention A Very Murray Christmas on Netflix. We watch that every year too, Bill Murray’s Christmas special spoof.
