Holistic Colleges w/ Stellar Music & Engineering Programs [NE resident in USAF, 3.5 GPA, 1560 SAT]

This will help a lot.

One university that occurs to me is U.Mass Lowell. It is very good for music. It has 8 ABET accredited engineering programs. It is about 40 minutes (16 miles) from Hascom Field and Air Force Base. It has a robotics program. A 3.5 UW GPA would certainly be sufficient for most programs (I am not completely certain regarding engineering), and of course 1560 SAT is excellent.

You would be a likely student for Wentworth, which is right next to Northeastern, as well. Smaller, but abet engineering, lots of majors, etc. Very urban! You could try for BU, too, though I think that will be harder with a 3.5 than Northeastern, but you never know, given your background…the rural, low-income, first gen air force is not their typical candidate. Proximity to hanscom and urban nature of these schools seems helpful for you, to me. And lots of robotics stuff about the state

With the info you have given-
I am going to suggest looking into CU Boulder.

There are at least 5 AF bases/guard locations within a 2-3 hour drive so you have great odds of finding a spot at one of those. (Helps the logistical aspect out a bit)
I feel this school covers much of what you are looking for also. The winters are not bad at all. This school also prioritizes weighted GPAs over UW- so that could help you out assuming that you have a higher W GPA?!

Good luck

In a similar vein to the UNM suggestion, U of Utah is also urban, has very strong engineering, and has a terrific music school with a jazz program. Hill AFB is 30 miles from campus. SLC gets winter weather but it’s not extreme. You could potentially get an Honors College offer with your stats. Robotics Undergraduate Programs – Robotics Center

University of Arizona could also be worth a look. Tucson has a great music scene, including jazz, and the AFB is only 7 miles from campus.

Agree that UNM and VCU both deserve a close look.

USC would be a big reach, but could be worth a try - they like military students and do a lot of defense-related work, including military applications of robotics. Robotics - USC Viterbi | Department of Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering The music school is excellent and offers a jazz studies minor. LA AFB is nearby. They’re rolling out binding ED next year which could help your chances if you know you’d be fully-funded and feel that the school checks all of your boxes, which it seems to. Looking at Air Force Bases by state - who could work - that has ABET accredited engineering and within a few hours of a base (usually less) - that are urban, and warm weather:

UAB - has music and jazz ensembles, but not a jazz major. Urban

U Arizona - mentioned above - excellent for engineering, has a jazz major - Urban-ish

U South Florida - has jazz studies - Urban-ish

UCF has jazz. Florida Tech has opportunities but not a major. Neither are “urban” but both not far from things - with FIT closer to the base but both well within range. Suburban

UNLV - fits - two close bases - Urban-ish

UNM - already mentioned - Urban

Virginia - VCU - Urban

Yes, there’s tons of schools out there but not a ton that meet your needs. These seem to touch those needs. Engineering has strength in so many places so I suspect you’d be fine at any. These will all have ABET accreditation although few have it in Mechatronics/Robotics - but all will have offerings.

You get into all these I believe.

How about SMU?

I take it that the ME and ECE majors and the Falconaires ensemble that plays jazz at the United States Air Force Academy are not that good a fit for your academic interests.

Here are some I’d recommend:

USC

Johns Hopkins/Peabody

UC Boulder

U Miami

Cleveland Institute of Music/Case Western Reserve

Agree on SMU.

RPI does have great jazz and other music groups on campus.

@Archchick @L_NewEngland Which Air Force Base is within two hours of RPI? I’m not seeing one on the air force base map, which is why I’m asking. It seems the closest is in MA, about 2 hours 45 away, but perhaps I’m missing one?

First, I said I wasn’t entirely sure about AF stuff, in my original post…(by that i kind of meant what “counted” for a base)

https://www.westover.afrc.af.mil/ Is closer than 2 hours..but may not meet their needs..

Well, it’s not good weather - but if that’s an active base, then it works. That’s why I was asking. I wasn’t diminishing. I didn’t know. I didn’t see one but I might not be using a good list.

Westover is an Air Reserve base, so that might be why it’s not on my list. Honestly, don’t know the difference (vs. a full base) or if that’s all OP needs. Then it would work.

Thanks for pointing out.

Just FYI

Oh, ok - I was going by the original post. Didn’t see an update.

Is RPI urban? Don’t know - but it seems they (OP) tend to urban since suburban gets “some leniency.”

If the OP truly wants urban, the list will be shorter than longer.

He is from Nebraska

Isn’t everywhere good weather compared to that! - lol

I am not what difference is either! But it isn’t a little small building at the side of an airport like some reserve buildings you see if that makes sense… it is, I think, the biggest reserve bases in the country.. still may not be useful for poster though. they will know!

I know someone in the army reserves that has been in FT for 20 years and worked directly for the Army Chief of Staff at one point so I find military systems confusing:)

Troy is a small city but is only 7 miles from Albany, which definitely counts as a city in my book.

I am an Air Force veteran who is married to an Air Force retiree (i.e.. I have been dealing with Air Force / military stuff for over 30 years) and there is so much that I am confused about (and worried with- hope OP truly has the needed information for his situation besides just school location) with OPs ask.

OP- have you graduated high school yet? What is your AFSC- not every base is going to have a place for you. Are you in the Air Force currently or in a pre-enlistment program? Are you going guard, reserves….? If you go through Basic and Tech school- you ‘may’ end up with enough college credits that you are a transfer student. This could change up the ‘Holistic’ view part a bit…..
I understand that these are all just logistical question- but without some of that answered, we are just throwing darts at a dart board blindly :person_shrugging:

Your high school record is impressive, and you will be able to get into many great schools (That GPA is not horrible by any means!)- but what you are asking right now is a bit to vague to be truly helpful.
But hopefully these suggestions can help you get a few ideas and a starting point for you to begin a more thorough application process.

Good luck

It will depend what OP means by urban. When someone says urban school to me, I think one where they can walk outside and be in the action vs driving miles away like you are describing. I don’t know the immediate outskirts of Troy but if Albany is the urban part of Troy, I would not describe that as urban. I even put above on USF - even though it’s in Tampa and surrounded by the amusement park and hotels, etc. - I wouldn’t call it urban like it’s downtown Tampa. I noted it as urban-ish.

OP will have to decide but when I think urban, I think BU (not likely an in) or Pitt (I didn’t see a base within range) or College of Charleston (only ABET in Systems Engineering and CS - but has air force bases and is urban and good weather.

If it’s an urban adjacent (meaning can get to somewhere relatively quickly, but not easily), I don’t think of that as urban vs. walking from school into “urban” activity.

But OP can make that delineation.

U of SC - not sure if he can get in - but that would be another OP could consider - less than an hour to Shaw AFB. It’s smack in downtown Columbia.
